1990 Battery

Ok, battery time again... My 1990 ZR-1 75B-84 went bad on me. My research shows that the AC Delco Professional replacement for the car is the 75VPG 42 months free replacement. 700 CCA, 95 RC.

Anybody say different? I was able to peel off the labels from the old battery. Could not believe how easy they came off. Saved them to maybe place over the original labels or since I am OCD place them on paper to include with all the other original docs.

No more AC DELCO batteries for me. I've had 2 where one of the lugs pulled out and made a horrendous mess.

I don't blame u. I guess I am going to learn the Gomer Pyle way...Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me". The previous battery also leaked from the pos terminal. Caught it before it did any damage. Happens again...then shame on me and will look for a different brand.

Jeff, OMG! when I replied I did not know of the horrendous mess I had to deal with tonight. 2 plus hrs and still not done. Cut away the eaten away the electrical protective sleeve that runs down below the battery, cleaned with baking soda each wire within the sleeve, compartment under the batter tray. Will buy protective sleeve tomorrow, wrap electrical tape on the ends that butt up to the original sleeves, put everything back together. I will be looking at the battery more often. Hope I will not encounter a 2nd time. Once is enough.

I believe that the latter ZR's had a battery insulator. I may try one even though was not issued in 1990.
Thanks,
Sam

I put an Interstate from Costco in mine last year. Car sits all the time so it's on a tender. No issues yet...

Was it the Mega-Tron Plus 75 Automotive Battery Six-Year Performance 700 CCA? If the Deco battery is an issue other than normal wear then will go with Interstate.

Not sure of exact name. It was the Interstate battery they had at Costco that fit..

It would be in your best interest to remove the battery, tray and get in there and clean everything. I wouldnt take a new AC DELCO battery for free. So you've had 2 batteries leak?

Jeff, yes, removed bad battery, everything I could. Sprayed baking soda, wiped till it was all gone. Had to replace new conduit that was eaten away protecting the wires that runs under the battery tray. Don't know what the wires are but guessing they are they are part of the rear lighting system. I did buy a battery insulator to contain another possible leak to contain it. What a learning experience. Don't want to do this again.

Yikes!! I'm sorry to hear that, I hope to never deal with battery clean up on my Beast.....We all been there done that with other cars, not fun clean up. I agree with Z51JEFF, why go through that mess again.

When I bought my Z, it had been sitting so long, the dealer had to put it on a charger for me to drive it. Then they called and said it was totally dead, so they replaced the original AC Delco battery with an Optima red top battery....Never had one issue, great battery. Granted I didn't cough up the dough for it, I think the Optimas are very expensive batteries.....but why risk anything? Our Beasts are rolling history pieces, they deserve nothing less than the best :proud:
