Dash units and Amplifiers

I have had cars where each speaker located about the cabin
had just (2) wires to connect: a (+) and a (-) wire.
The head unit in the dash contained the amplifier(s).

I know that our speakers each have an accompanying amplifier
located within the speaker enclosure.

Would any dash unit still work in our cars? Would they
effectively be "double amplified"? Just trying to figure
it all out. TIA!

Two totally different system. Will not be double amplified. If you want to install non-Bose head unit, you have to splice in a interface.

Hey Ted
I removed the whole Bose system in 2004 and went with Infinity speakers front and back. I used a Clarion head unit model number DXZ 845 MC. Its NLA now.

Here it is 12 years later and it still works fine. I liked the Clarion unit so much I bought a spare. I like it because it has an internal hard drive which allows about 80 minutes of

recording off a CD that you can erase and record something else anytime you like. I paid over $200 for it... If you are doing something different than the Bose system you can have it for a $100.

I don't think I am ever going to need it. Its still brand new in the box with a remote.

I had another 90 Z a few years ago with a stock Bose system in it. I was amazed at how good it sounded in spite of its age. The mileage on it was around 40k at that time.

So, the Bose can still perform if you don't mind periodic maintenance.
