Apollo 11 landing, 45th Anniversary.
I wasnt born yet, but since I am a space travel fanatic, I was wondering if any of you "experienced" folks have any recollections of the Apollo 11 launch, Moon landing, Earth landing?
My Mom just told me that she was at a campground on July 20, 1969 with some friends. The campground put a TV in this gathering area and most of the campers watched the landing. Mr Collins, President Bush, Mr Armstrong and Dr Aldrin pictured at the 35th anniversary in 2004.. http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...ps666fff69.jpg And 5 years ago at the 40th Apollo 11 anniversary. Dr Aldrin, Mr Collins, Mr Armstrong and President Obama. http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...psf0be8381.jpg Metal is being bent for the new rocket, Space Launch System that will be larger than the Saturn 5 rockets, will use 4 SPace Shuttle Main Engines(there are 16 flown SSME's aka RS-25D that will be used on SLS and then drop into the -so no longer reuseable. There are enough flown SSME's for 4 SLS launches, then a RS25E will be built, pretty much same engine, but about 1/2 the cost as it doesnt have to be reuseable, boosted by longer Solid Rocket boosters(than Shuttle boosters 5 segment vs 4 segment used on SHuttle). Test launch of the Orion capsule to be used atop manned SLS launches is being launched atop a Delta 4 rocket this December, then SLS-1 will be launched (unmanned) to circum-navigate the Moon in 2017. Congrats to NASA, the USA and all involved, such a great feat was accomplished 45 years ago on this day, 1969. A great article from my favourite spaceflight site. http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2014/...bright-future/ Excellent launch video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vpgIaWbA-vs :flag: What do you remember about this period in time, 45 years ago? |
Re: Apollo 11 landing, 45th Anniversary.
I was 5, sitting in front of the TV, not really understanding. My father had his camera on a tripod taking pictures of the TV. It always surprised me he didn't work for NASA. That was right up his alley.

Yep!
I remember. Have you ever seen a Saturn 5 up close? I would love to drive one! |

Re: Apollo 11 landing, 45th Anniversary.
I was in Birmingham MI. and in 5th grade.
I took a photo of the TV with my Polaroid Camera as the "One small step for Man" was happening. I still have that photo in my scrapbook. It was a great feeling of USA pride and so proud to be an American moment even for a 5th grader. I can still remember it well to this day as if if it only happened a few years ago. For sure an EPIC moment frozen in time for me. I think later that day I took my 3hp Lil Indian Mini Bike for a nice ride to celebrate being an American. http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...ps72a902c1.jpg |
