Hood Wheel Well Fender

My engine was refinished by Marc back in 2011. Under my hood is near flawless except for my fenders above the wheel wells. This always bothers me at car shows as it stands out like a sore thumb. It's the finish that is flaking off so no amount of cleaning and shining does any good. I cant seem to find any aftermarket availability. Are these no longer made? Found some old threads about spray paint that will restore the finish. Is this the only option? I have a 94 and the liner is supported by rivets. They aren't screws so I wasnt sure how to even go about removing them to paint. One guy at a show yesterday told me he left on and just covered the entire car in plastic and painted the liner, but that seemed a bit extreme to me.

I got some very fine sandpaper and was just going to try and maybe wet sand it down to maybe at least remove all the flaking hoping that would make it look better. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Dave

I also reached out to Mirrock to see if they had any for sale. Thought maybe if I had a second set I could experiment with finishes. Again though wasnt sure how to even remove with the rivets.

Drill out the rivets and refinish with a good semi-gloss. When you reinstall just use the the early style clips and torx screws. The hood bracing should be slotted or at least marked for installing them.

If you are going to drill out the rivets, use a depth ring on the bit so you don't poke all the way through.

Get them off the car and have them soda blasted or some other type of media that won’t hurt the plastic and leave them bare. I’ve found that once clean if you put some type of dressing on them it only makes them look like crap.

Thanks all for the advice. Agree on the dressing. Been trying to put different dressings on there during local car shows to try and hide some of the imperfections and it only made things worse.

Synthetic wax like Turtle Wax ICE works nice on them and all the wheel well plastic. Also works nicely on the engine itself. I've been doing it for years... doesn't yellow and shines nicely.

Stoner’s Trim Shine aerosol is great on an unpainted fender liner. I like their pump spray a little less. Either way, just apply and wipe off the excess. It’s water based and doesn’t leave a sticky or wet residue that will attract more dirt.

Armor All Extreme shine for the surfaces in the wheel wells and regular for the inner surfaces of the hood.
