Thanks for posting Paul.
Being an old navy steam snipe can’t help but notice the amount of steam they are releasing. Also notice that handsome diesel locomotive a few cars back. Must of needed a tow.

Thanks Paul--great video. From what I can discern, the 4014 will steam through Lake Bluff on Friday July 26 (next Friday). I am guessing it will go through around 10:30-11:30 AM as we are about halfway between its departure point in Butler WI and its destination in West Chicago IL.(due to arrive 2:30 PM). The engine and train will be on display in West Chicago, IL Saturday, Sunday and Monday. For those who are interested, here is a link to the UP Tour schedule https://www.up.com/heritage/steam/schedule/index.htm. It contains a link to parking information but they essentially direct you to park at the West Chicago Metra station, about 10 minutes away. I know this is not everybody's cup of tea, but I am going to try to see it go through Lake Bluff and will go out to West Chicago to see it on display, probably Sunday.--Bob.

The diesel provides modern signalling and breaking assist
And, it is sort of a "spare tire" - a bit of insurance in case it is needed (like it did in Rawlings WY on the return trip on its run from Ogden (7/13th?) when the 4014 "fell between the gauge" on a tight curve in the rail yard. 4014 had to be pulled back onto the rail with the diesel providing traction once the 4014 engine's wheels were ramped back onto the rail with blocks of wood. Fascination proceedure!

Yeah, the amount of steam being vented does explain how diesels are so much more efficient and in part why steam was partially eclipsed. The brute traction force of steam is only supplanted now with multiple diesel locos on heavy trains.

And while there is a lot of steam, I believe they converted 4014 from coal to oil fired boilers to burn cleaner. Plan to go see it pass by on Friday then Sunday in West Chicago.--Bob
