The diesel provides modern signalling and breaking assist
And, it is sort of a "spare tire" - a bit of insurance in case it is needed (like it did in Rawlings WY on the return trip on its run from Ogden (7/13th?) when the 4014 "fell between the gauge" on a tight curve in the rail yard. 4014 had to be pulled back onto the rail with the diesel providing traction once the 4014 engine's wheels were ramped back onto the rail with blocks of wood. Fascination proceedure!

Yeah, the amount of steam being vented does explain how diesels are so much more efficient and in part why steam was partially eclipsed. The brute traction force of steam is only supplanted now with multiple diesel locos on heavy trains.
