Removing the shift knob wedge:
- Remove the shift pattern insert from the knob
- Drill and tap the wedge for a small (~3mm) bolt (bolt being approx 2" long)
- Lay a fender washer (big washer, small hole) over the top of the shift knob
- thread a nut about half way or so onto the bolt, and follow that with a small flat washer
- Pass the bolt through the fender washer and thread it into the (drilled and tapped) wedge (so that the small washer rests on the fender washer and the nut can be turned down against the small washer
- Put a dab of grease on the nut and threads and turn the nut down against the washers.
- Continue to turn the nut down, thus pulling the bolt upward, pulling the wedge with it. (usually only takes a turn or two and the wedge pops free and can be extracted by lifting the whole jig upward.
Upon reinstalling the wedge, I tap it back in using a wood dowel to preserve the threads and avoid further distorting the wedge...just in case!
