Default coolant sensorquestion

Before I re-install my plenum, I need to know the facts regarding the coolant sensor. There are two ports, one for the gauge sensor and one for the ECM sensor. Does it matter which port is used for each sensor? I don't believe it does since they are next to other in the same volume of water. Also should they be free of any thread sealant? In other words, do the need to be grounded to the injector housing?
