I'm disappointed that they chose not to persue the cam-in-cam VVT. Instead they are just phasing a single cam with no way to change overlap. I think some other entity holds patent on that and GM nixed it due to lic costs (just my theory).
I'm not against a high tech 2 valve engine at all, but 3 of my last newer cars all had proper VVT and I'm telling you, I do not care to own an engine type that does not use this tech. It is obvious at this point that GM isn't going to make large displacement 32v v8's anytime soon. |

I think the premise of your question is wrong. How is the LS platform dying? It seems like normal development is proceeding logically. How you relate the ancient design of the LT5 to this is not clear.
The old LT5 is hampered by a severe weight penalty, along with the packaging problems of a four cam motor. The old screamer is much beloved by all us C4 ZR-1 nuts, but as far as development goes, it's contributions were all made in the 20th Century. BTW, the long list of specs provided don't seem to include one of the most important ones, weight. It made the power, but size and weight is what killed the LT5. |
