Default Lime Rock Sunday 9/2 "Sunday in the Park"

Sunday, Sept 2, Lime Rock Park as part of the 30th "Lime Rock Historics", "Sunday in the Park" concourse and "Gathering of Clubs".

.....The "Historics" weekend is a featured international event celebrating the years of racing at Lime Rock as well as other major sports car tracks. It is one of just a hand full of such events. Vintage local race cars are displayed and raced on Saturday, while Monday features many of the worlds most significant historic sports racing cars. The paddock/pits are a show in itself!

.....The "Sunday in the Park" is a day set aside, without racing, (local ordinance, no racing on Sundays) for the display of some of the world's most significant automobiles. Hundreds of world class vehicles, from collections here and in Europe, find their way to Lime Rock for this prestigious event and are displayed along the entire front stretch, from "the downhill" to the "first turn". This is not your average cruise nite!!!! Have ya ever seen Sterling Moss or a vintage Formula 1 car at a cruise nite? www.limerock.com

..... Automobile clubs from the Northeast (that includes us ZR-1 guys) are invited to attend, and their cars ring the track in groups by marque. You don't need a "show car", but ya might want to wash it... This "Gathering of Clubs" includes the world's most significant marques, as well as our Vettes!!!... (but last year, only 1 Vette with more than 1 cam...)

Bring a chair, cooler and comfortable shoes.
Get your "Sunday in the Park" tickets ahead of time (by 8/24 I think, but check their website), www.limerock.com or by phone @ 1-860-435-5000. Lots more about the event at their website!

Outrageously fun track to witness. My favorite is that "Downhill" after the Bailey Bridge because that right turn at the base of the hill right at station 7 is a huge challenge even for seasoned drivers.

I have my pass and my track parking ticket for the Sunday show. Soooo, I'll be there to hold up the C4 end of the line!

Lime Rock Park: A Very Special Auto 'Museum' - One Day Each Year

LAKEVILLE, Conn. (August 20) - While New York City may be home to some of the world's finest museums, when it comes to celebrating the history of personal mobility, automotive enthusiasts will only need to travel 100 miles from the Big Apple to visit a unique once-per-year "museum" - Lime Rock Park's Sunday in the Park concours d'elegance.

The concours, and its unusual companion event, the Gathering of the Marques, is Sunday, September 2.

The concours and marque gathering have been integral to Lime Rock Park's traditional Labor Day weekend vintage extravaganza since the 1980s. This year's Historic Festival 30 presented by Jaguar is Friday, August 31 through Labor Day Monday, September 3.

"A concours event such as Lime Rock Park's is really a great day of automotive education, where you see a huge variety of historic vehicles," says Kent Bain, Sunday in the Park's organizer.
"The automobile is a cultural icon of the western world, central to our lives. People are very passionate about their cars: they are not simply 'transport.' For folks who enter cars into a noted concours, you can quadruple that passion.

"You see so much... very old cars, some of which look virtually brand new... race cars from more than half-a-century ago - and still raced today... significant designs that automotive historians note as game-changers, inspiring entirely different ways to execute the form, and function, of the automobile. You experience all that here.

"Few dispute the notion of the automobile as art, and our Sunday in the Park Concours event showcases that. But it also celebrates the fact that these vehicles were built to be enjoyed - not just left in the garage to be polished every week.

"This is really like a museum or an art show, open for one day. The art of personal mobility is something which we certainly believe should be celebrated."

More than 200 cars have entered the Sunday in the Park Concours, from Brass Era and pre-WWI all the way through select examples from the 1980s.

While concours are staged throughout America, Lime Rock's is unique; no other venue in the U.S. has three days of on-track racing sandwiching a prestigious concours event - all on the same property.

"There are two different philosophies when it comes to concours," Bain said.
"Do you want classic cars that can be - and are - used on a regular basis? Owners of those cars, and the fans that come to admire them, like that feeling of going back to the days when the car was new.

"On the other hand are those that appreciate a car being absolutely perfect, like the day they rolled off the production line. Pristine. To the extent that you dare not use it.

"There has been some conflict between the two ideas, but we think our event successfully embraces both philosophies.

"We also include cars which despite their age, are still taken on the race track and used in the manner for which they were designed - not always at 10/10ths, but pushed hard.

"We think we do a pretty good job of marrying the two concours ideas – the enjoyment and use of automotive history as well as the preservation and dedication to perfection."

The entrant list for the Sunday in the Park Concours features a wide cross section of automotive history. Bain expects about 25 per cent of the historic machines to be competition vehicles that have been raced or rallied in the past.

In addition to the Sunday in the Park Coucours, the Lime Rock event also features the Gathering of the Marques – a car show featuring very nice examples of virtually every model and marque that claims dedicated and enthusiastic followers... everything from Audi, BMW, Shelby, Chevrolet, Ford, Mini, Mercedes and Lotus to Volvo, Saab, Citroen and, of course, all the Italian and British marques, with a dash of Asian brands to boot. There’s even a section dedicated to old and new rally racers.

With the Concours entrants filling the front straight, the Gathering of the Marques is a resplendent 400-car display filling the remaining one mile of circuit, from the exit of Big Bend to the Bailey Bridge at the top of the famous Downhill corner.

Historic Festival 30 presented by Jaguar, the Sunday in the Park Concours & Gathering of the Marques is Friday, August 31 through Labor Day Monday, September 3. The vintage racing itself is Saturday and Monday, dawn to dusk, 300+ cars divided into 10 competitive race groups. The 2012 Honored Guest is Sir Stirling Moss, considered motorsports' greatest "all-rounder" driver in the sport. Many of the famous cars he drove to noteworthy victories at the peak of his F1 and sports car career - Vanwalls, Coopers, Jaguars, Maseratis - will be displayed, demonstrated and even raced over the weekend.

Great event @ Lime Rock today I even got to see Tom Tom again!
Will post some pix soon. (when I figure out how to do it without screwing it up...)
For example: Mario Andretti's Lotus championship winning F1 car, an original Bill Thomas "Cheetah" (if you've gotta ask what that is, you weren't around in the 60s...), several cars from the Sterling Moss collection (yes, that Sterling Moss!), a Greenwood racing Corvette, early 70s Can Am McLaren with aluminum ZL-1 BB, a couple Formula 5000 racers, some Bugattis, a Duesenberg or two and lots of other "serious" cars. As I said in a previous post, this wasn't your everyday cruise nite!
