Default Radar Detector Question

Question for those w/ radar detectors, especially Valentine unit - can you detect photo radars with these detectors?

The short answer is no for the fixed units like at the street corners. Yes for the mobile units but the range sucks

They are like "instant-on" radar or laser. If there are cars in front of you, your detector may catch it when it measures their speed. If you are alone, or the first car, you are probably toast, because there is nothing to detect until it nails you.

If you have a smart phone, apps like "trapster" are interesting:

The Passport 9500ix has GPS and is programed (updated weekly) with redlight camera's and other's. It can also communicate with a network of user's in your area that update speedtraps and camera's realtime (Escort Live). It warns you as you are APPROACHING the red light, before it zaps you. I find it to be an excellent detector and the most technologically up to date of any of the detector's. By the way, the GPS function works in our cars.

My dillima is thatI live in virginia and work in DC and detectors are illegal in both jurisdictions. This rules out Passport since it has to be mounted behind the cut out. So, I was thinking about a Valentine unit mounted under the bumper (weatherproofed, of course...) with a remote display. I guess my only option is to run a navigation units w/ photo radar POC downloaded.

Thanks guys!

The 9500ci is a stealth mounted unit with remote display unit. Check this out on the escort website. Has all the features the 9500ix has.

Look at it this way; 2 1/2 speeding tickets and you are even minus the increase in insurance.
