Default Just joined the forum

I acquired my 91 white/black, 53k miles, about a year and a half ago. Have been visiting the forum as a guest and just joined today. #210 is basically a rescue, has a little body damage on about every panel. Engine is solid but smokes a bit from underneath. Tranny has syncro grinding 1st/2nd. Not a mechanic but not afraid to get dirty. I have done the general tuneup and fluid changes and the major clean up so far plus some wiring fixes and refurbished the wheels. I am getting ready to take it next week to have the transmission rebuilt here locally and in the process of replacing all the weather seals.
Anyway, just wanted to introduce myself and look forward to being part of the forum.

Welcome to the Registry... Just a word of advice, make certain the place doing your transmission work is very familiar with the ZF6 The previous owner of my car had the tranny rebuilt by a shop who supposedly knew what he was doing and said he'd done a few before. Long story short, and about $6,000.... he did such a poor job the transmission was pretty much ruined and needed a new case and many new internal parts. If you have the funds to ship the tranny to Bill Bedreau the ZF Doc in Arizona, he is the guy for these trannys

billb@zfdoc.com or call Bill Boudreau at (602) 319-6575.

PS... post up some pics of your ride!

Welcome to the "Insanity", I mean Registry! My current ZR-1 is also a '91 and when I purchased it, it needed work. I had a transmission built by Bill Boudreau and it was well worth the money. He was great to deal with as well.
Like yourself, I am not a mechanic, and I depend on the advice/consult of several members of this registry, so if you have a problem or question, just ask.

Welcome to the madness!

Here is the only pic I have. It was at the dealer the day I bought it. I removed the GS stripes.
The logistics of removing and shipping the transmission would be the problem with sending it to Bill. I dont have a place (nor the expertise) to remove it. What makes it difficult for a good shop to repair them?

Congrats on being the caretaker of a truly remarkable car that does not get the credit it deserves.
I don't know the answer to that question but maybe if you give Bill a call he may be able to give you some advice. I know there are differences between the ZF6 in the ZR-1 and other ZF6s. I consider myself to be an ok mechanic, but that said I just came back from getting my car back from Steve at Crossed Flags performance, having the shocks replaced, And it was apparent to me how much I have yet to learn about these machines based on what Steve knows. The folks on this board have learned many lessons bad and good and such sage advice should be noted.
The labor involved with removing the transmission will be similar regardless of who does the work. A good honest shop maybe willing to pull the trans and ship it to a rebulider. Heck, most the time you go to transmission shop you don't get your original trans back as it gets sent in as a core charge for one purchased on the "market". That is exactly what you don't want to happen.

Drive the ZR-1 to Cave Creek, AZ (leave it with Bill) and take a bus back to Tulsa.
Since you cannot remove the transmission (a bit more complicated to install).

Let Bill do the removal, Restoration, and Installation of the Transmission

Bill will also install the C4 Beam Plates for you
