Default shifter

What's the trick to getting the top boot out to put in a hurst shifter? Is there some other way than lowering the back of the trans?

You may want to consider this shifter for the ZR-1

If you are asking about the leather boot, you have to remove the center console lid, then remove the shifter bezel (2 screws at the rear corners and 1 screw under the front cup holder). Remove the shifter knob. The leather boot is attached to the bezel. Then there are 4 screws to remove the rubber boot. Be careful, there is a lot of sticky sealant around the rubber boot lower edge. Don't get the sealant on you interior.

Under the car you have to pull back the rubber boot to access the pin that allows the shifter link to be disconnected.

It isn't possible to lower the back of the transmission without removing the C-Beam, which is a much bigger job than doing the shifter.

Good luck.

I removed everything down to the rubber boot, it appears to be under the floor and try as I may I couldn't get the top rubber boot out without fear of ripping it. I have all the instructions for the Hurst and things went well till I tried to remove the boot.

The rubber boot is tucked around a lip on the tunnel. You have to get a corner or edge on the right side peeled up and then work your way around the perimeter. Once again, be careful with the sealant under the boot. It makes a mess on carpet.

Reinstalling the boot is also a challenge because it is hard to tuck under the left side of the boot because of the limited clearance to the interior trim.

Good luck

I hope your Hurst has a reverse lock out feature.

IS the hurst shifter dropping into reverse a common problem?

No but with no lock out safety is would be expensive if it ever did happen by accident.
A few years back another member was entertaining the same deal to put a Hearst shifter in. If I remember right it had no special lockout for reverse and it is possible to make the mistake and wreck the tranny so he elected not to go that route.

I have never had a problem with reverse on three ZR-1's with Hurst shifters.
