Looks like you made a big mistake, I am willing to help you recoup some of your money by taking it off your hands for $10K, best to get this money pit off your hands ASAP before it gets worse:mrgreen: Seriously, car can be insured. Road worthy or not it is insurable under collector car insurance, there is obvious evidence of value via the auction. As to the title, you simply need to title the car as a kit car. Great buy, but the the following are required: 1)Please describe the auction, since Speed screwed us, how many bidders, etc. 2)pics 3)pics 4)more pics..... |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Ha that's a good one. Well, no problem on the insurance. It was insured less then 1/2 hour after bidding ended. Last year I set up an insurance policy through one of the BJ approved companies. They can Insure it on site. So that part is done. Not too worried about title yet. Anyway it's not like I'm gonna use it for my daily driver anywas (that's what #74 is for!)
There was a lot of interest in the car. It didn't/won't start (big time and price difference between those two words) by the time they towed it up to the auction tent there was a crowd of 5 or 6 around it all the way. I knew enough about it so I was not part of the crowd. They delayed getting it up on the block due to the long tow rope and the sharp 90 degree angles needed to get in and out. It finally made it up. The bids started at $5K. when it got to $10K I took it to $15K and then rapid fire bid from there. There were many who felt it would be a "bargain" they dropped away quickly. It got to $1K incr. when it got to $47K I bid $50K to show the other guy I wasn't going away easy. Well they tried to get $51K for an eternity and then it was all over. I don't blame speed for going to commercial. As the car sits it is not very well presented. I am sure they did not anticipate that it would end up tied for 5th highest on the day. Only a nut like me would pay $50K for a POS like that. I will get it back to my shop today and the fun will begin. Already ordered window sticker and build sheet for it. I will order the dealer invoice (they even produce something if the car stayes at GM) today. It will be fun, and hopefully It I can get it together by the 20th Gathering. I have already developed a ton of GM contacts researching #74 so hopefully I will be able to chip away at its early past. More to follow... Eric |

I always wondered how that works for getting the car.. So once you win the auction for a vehicle, what are the steps that need to be taken before you get the car. meaning does the car have to stay at the Auction location until the very end? I have never bought a car at an auction like thatbut I have watch Mecum Auctions at Bloomington Gold, so what happens after the 'win' Thanks, |

A guy runs out with a clip board. There is a form in duplicate that has all the information on it, lot #, hammer price, auctioneer, operator (bidders assistant). He adds your bidder number and you sign that form. Now you accept the 'contract' to buy car. They give you the yellow copy. They keep the white. They instruct you that you need to pay by close of business day. You wonder around in a daze for 30 minutes and answer fun questions like "What do you do with a car you can't drive?" "wow that seems a lot for a car that doesnt run what makes it so special?" "my uncle had a steel corvette!" (the last one was a joke) You take that slip to the business office. They assign you a closing agent who pulls the cars file and your bidder file...... Part 2 to follow... Gotta run up to the Auction to get it towed. Eric |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
I bet there were a lot of heads poping up wondering what that car was after it sold for $55,000. Including Speed network...
Congrats... |

How do you get a copy of the dealer invoice? I didn't know these were available. Thanks and good luck with the new car. George |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Then they total up what you owe, commisions, taxes etc. You take a deep breath and pray your pen has enough ink to write that big of a check. They hand you two sets of paper work a white copy and a yellow copy. Then you walk accross the parking lot to the "Property Room" There they check to see if there are any additional loose things for the car, Manuals, trophies, all those signs you see models carry on the stage etc. There are all sorts of really neat things in there from hard tops to original tires. all sorted on shelves by lot number. In the case of 004 there was no additional information. That was a drag because #074 had it's log book there. Then you head down to key control. After the car is run through and returned to the tent the keys are dropped off at another tent......
More to follow... And a teaser picture on my first day home with #004 http://www.syreal.com/Fullpowersmall.jpg |

Is tht your Hot rod too?

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Thats the 1990 NSRA Giveaway car. Know back then as the ZR32. It was built by California Street Rods. Chevy used CSR to build some west coast concepts back in the day. They gave them #74 (which they painted Plum Crazy) to use and the drivetrain and running gear from another <20 VIN 1989 ZR-1. I have heard it was #13 but I have not confirmed that yet. They built it and showed it. It came in 2nd or 3rd at the 1990 Oakland Hotrod show. Then they raffled it off at the 1990 NSRA show. #74 and the ZR32 running gear were at SIMA in 1989. I have tracked ZR32 a little, but have not found it's current owner. Wouldn't that be a neat reunion.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
OK for those new to this car. I found that car after a tip from a friend. It was located at a community college that trains techs for GM, Crysler and Ford. They wanted to donate to a museum but GM still owned the cat and would not let it go to the NCM. They took it back to the Heritage center. I knew when I found out that they had #3 that sooner or later this car would come out. The car was repainted by the tech school as a training exercise. I think the odo showed 270 miles when I saw it so it must have gone to the tech center very early. The school turned $250k in late 90s.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
It shows 344 Miles on the ODO now. The paint job is actualy not bad. It must have a ton of metallic layers because it appears a purplish maroon when lit in one direction and blue in another and black when lit from above. There are painted pin stripes on it. That are really clear coated in they are so subtle I did not see them until it was lit at my building.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
OK I left you at key control. You go there they check you ID and Bill of Sale and they give you your keys. They then tell you what tent the car is in and off you go. You find it and do the walk around and pull and poke at all the things you couldnt do before. When you pay they provide you with a temp license tag if it remains in the area. Then you can drive it away. It's quite an experience to win and 30 minutes later your driving it off the lot. You head to the main gate. You hand the yellow copy to the gate attendant. They compare the VIN on the Bill of Sale to the VIN of the car. They check you ID again. Then the gate opens up and away you go. All of that took place for 004 except the drive off part. Since it was sold on a salvage title they would not provide a temp tag for it. I had a flat bed tow truck haul it off the lot to my building. That was fun. they had to pull me through a crowded tent with a golf cart to the flat bed. Ever try to steer a ZR-1 with bad brakes and no power steering through a thousand people. All of them laughing at the POS you just paid $50K for!
The towing company owner drove the cart. He was also the guy that towed the car to the block with the Razor ATV. More on that story later... Eric |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
thanks for the detail Eric.. sounds like a surreal experience

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Update on the car. Put air in the two front tires. The passenger side tire holds air, the driver side doesn't. I hope some slime will fix that since the tires appear original. The more I look at the engine the more it looks like it may only have 344 miles on it. It is so clean. I dropped the spare crawled around underneath. The tire bag has been chewed by a mouse. The tire has "Pilot #4" written with grease pen on it. The battery in the car is dead. I pulled that. None of the relays in the battery area are secured to anything. #74 has them fastened to brackets etc. The ECU is remanufactured, but the part number matched the one in #74. I will get some pictures up later.
Also heard back from Allied Vaughn (vehicleinvoice"at"gmmediaarchive.com Stacy) She informs me that there isn't an invoice for #4. For some reason she said "I recognize this VIN" then says the system says its marked as "a company car PEP scrapped vehicle" Can anyone guess what PEP means? She didn't know. Fun RPO codes from the SPI: AR9: seats: Seat front European Style Pass/driver WD1: Pilot vehicle UM6: Non bose cassette deck Stay tuned... |

GM Still uses the PEP car status. 2009 ZR1's with PEP status 95800007 95800021 95800076 95800077 95800117 95800128 Not sure what PEP stands for. |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Believe PEP is the acronym for GMs "Product Evaluation Program" where the vehicle is driven as a company car by a GM executive.
|
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
Scott, thanks for the PEP info. Turns out GM searched for the dealer invoice in the last few weeks that's why they recognized the vin.

Thought this was interesting. My 1989 L98 Corvette has standard cloth seats (1 of only 400 built that year) Here is a side bolster comparison between the two:

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
PEP cars are giving to GM level 8 Managers and above, generally for 1 year or less, sometimes as little as 3 months, the individidual keeps a log of issues and evaluations during that time period. Then GM employees are allowed to buy the PEP cars at greatly reduced pricing.

Good stuff thanks. I imagine there was probably an embargo on buying an 89 ZR-1 though. So lets speculate who was a level 8 manager in 1989? Dave Mclellan? John Heinricy? |
Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ
After Level 8 they go unclassified which is what those guys would have been, at that level you pretty much take what car you want!
