I raced with Matt @ Mojave a couple of times, loved spanking his Porsche the 1st time, but he had the last laugh the 2nd time with a ZR1, no dash, Really nice guy, good times, true car guy

I am in with either the 91 368 if it gets done or the 90....we need a set of FBI community racing tires....everybody get a run in on some racing slicks....

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
October is usually cool(er) and dry. The morning DA would favor some really quick passes, me thinks! Maybe Bob G and Kevin too can join in the fray!
My big milestone would be reaching 150 mph. But, using the power "square law" for velocity, I don't think the mods I have in mind are going to give me 40-50 more hp that it would take to get that high (put me right up there near Pete's motor - ain't gonna happen this year). However, before the next 1/2 mile WANNAGOFAST event, the CPCC 1/4 mile Corvette Shootout will hopefully come in September - and the ZR-1s and the FBI will be the defending champions again! Do we know how to have fun, OR WHAT?? :fahne: |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Here's some further information regarding a controversy on speed and timing.
Could AL have actually had 2 runs identical down to the 10000th" Hmmm. Hey Peter! Yes, we certainly cannot control the results. I have just spoken with the company and they have assured me the results were not "duplicates" but real speeds recorded separately for each pass. There was actually a pass made in between the GT-R and Viper passes and it did not have the same speed. The Viper and GT-R were extremely close throughout the day so honestly the tie does not surprise me. There is only so many values you can get in a 66ft speed trap so we are now looking at upgrading to a 132ft trap in order to lessen the chance of people running the same speed. At the end of the day everyone had a great time and our speed equipment ran perfectly, which allowed everyone to get tons of passes in Official Results for class winners should be posted by tomorrow! |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
If they increase the trap length, won't that lower trap speeds?

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!

Bottom line: Regardless of the trap length (distance between the start/stop gates), neither the existing nor proposed additional length guarantees there won't be two or more identical speeds. IT COULD STILL HAPPEN, in other words. |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Paul,
There were several cars on both days where the exact same speed was recorded for sequential runs. That's what makes it very suspicious. From my point of view, I want to know what the speed is AT THE LINE, not an average speed. |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Quote:
I hear ya, far as speed at the line vs. average. But, as long as speed = distance/time, the only way to approach the pinnacle is by narrowing the distance. However, practically speaking, errors introduced by the chronograph is typically a fixed value - a certain amount of fixed time error (related to signal pulse response detection/lag and timer clock frequency, etc.), and not a fixed percentage of the calculated value. So, the shorter the time between gates, the greater the ambiguity is, due to that fixed measurement accuracy error inherent to the measuring device. That's where a Doppler radar differs in its approach. The speed is determined by the frequency shift in the arriving pulses compared to the transmitted pulses. And, with "peak hold" software, the peak speed could be recorded regardless of where on the track it occurred. Just a thought. |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Paul,
After all this is a TOP SPEED event, so it would seem to me that other organizers have figured out the equipment thing long time ago. I think the Doppler would be best approach Have redundant guns. |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Quote:
Yes. Dual "speed guns" would solve all this trap stuff. And, if we really want NASA-esque accuracy, a third radar used as a tie-breaker could be employed. And, straddling the finish line with the gates would also mitigate most(?) of the error introduce by acceleration through the gates. And, what is not considered here is a measuring device needs to be able to measure (time in this case) to a factor least 10 times greater resolution than the least significant digit. In other words, if mph is measured to 1/10,000 seconds, the measuring device must be able to measure to 1/100,000 in order to round up to the next nearest 1/10,000th. An even bigger question might be: [I]is the resulting mph measured or extrapolated (mathematically) by virtue of the values considered? If legitimately measured, fine; we have a legitimate value. But, if it is an extrapolation, the result is invalid. *For example: Given the integers 13 รท 7 = 1.85714285714 (to "only" 11 places). If the measurement device is only capable of measurement accuracy to integer level (whole numbers), then the decimal fraction (numbers to the right of the decimal) is bogus. In other words, if (some chrony) was only capable of measuring to 1/100 (rounded to 1/10th) then the second, third, fourth, etc. significant digit on up are meaningless. At some point this gets way to serious for the average driver (me included). But, at what point is the limit for practical accuracy? Opinions vary, I'm sure. Paul |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Hey Paul
I didn't know you speak Greek LOL You said chronograph in Greek chrono means time and graph or graphee means write put them togather and you get write time or vice versa. Paul,we just have to baptize you and you'll be an official Greek :) Pete |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Paul,
Do you understand what Pete means by "baptizing" you Greek. It's sorta like somebody saying "You sure have a puurty mouth." BAAAAAAHHHHHH! |

Pete... With the thought of a "Greek baptism" in mind, I'll bet I could run the half mile as fast as my Z will go! How-some-ever...Speaking of baptizing n puurdy :censored:, I saw that movie too! But, maybe you should know that my vast experience with my personal chronograph is the one I use to measure muzzle velocity pertaining to that "other hobby" of mine.... LOL! |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Gentlemen,
Just read that Bult Field has been sold to IDOT. The October event has been cancelled unfortunately. WGF is looking for another venue in the Midwest, but for now it looks like top speed racing is done for the year in the Chicagoland area. I understand the Michigan Mile was also cancelled. I'm sure Blake (@wannaGOFAST) will also create a thread on this but I just saw this come across FB Quote: It is with a very heavy heart that we must inform everyone that as of June 30th Bult Field in Monee, IL has been sold to the Illinois Department of Transportation. This government organization has no desire to allow us to host our events anymore, therefore we must cancel our October 11-12th, 2014 Chicago 1/2 Mile Shootout. We want to sincerely thank all of our sponsors, participants and fans who made this event such a huge success in a very small period of time. You welcomed our staff to your city with open arms and we enjoyed meeting each and everyone of you. We hope that all of you enjoyed the event as much as all of our staff did and that you got to really experience your cars the way you've always wanted.....as this has been our intention with these events since Day 1. Please know that we are not giving up on the MidWest and that we are currently searching for a new home for this event. Take care fellow MidWest GOFAST Family and we hope to have some great news for you in the future! Kindest Regards, -Blake & the WGF Crew |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Well, that sucks. The Illinois StateTreasury is hemorrhaging as it is. WTF are they buying private aircraft airports for anyway?

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Too bad Lake in the hills airport is only .72 miles I think they would do something like this...they are pushing to generate more revenue

Here is a copy of the article in the Trib. It is the Illinois Dept. of Transportation. Part of the land grab for the Peotone airport where all the politicians and their friends probably own land. Paid $34 million of our money for 288 acres or about ten times the value of good Illinois farmland, and ten times the amount paid for the first 3,315 acres bought. Somebody knows somebody I'll bet. Aren't Illinois politics wonderful. -Bob
