Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I just bought two of the Napa 1324 Wix filters yesterday for my future oil changes. They looked them up and their data said they have the check valve as reported and a 16 pound bypass pressure. Most of the things I've bought from Napa are reasonable performers for the l48 1976's engine and now this one. Followed Marc's rec.

Isn't this mill (LT5) bulletproof?

Seems that if you do the oil & filter change every 3k, or 3 months, whichever comes FIRST , then even a budget filter will get the job done... (unless the hammer stays on the floor for track use).

I owned a fleet for courier & delivery that I ran, and did the O/C about every 10 days for all of them, for many years, which was roughly, 3k, and all the vehicles kept a good squeeze under the heads. The last one, an Express 1-ton 5.7 bought new '02 as my own personal, had ZERO squeeze loss @ 205k...

just out of curiosity when you reset the oil change on the dashboard, how many miles before it comes on saying to change? My 2008 TBSS calculates oil wear so it's not miles at all. How does this one work, straight miles or sensors inputs for varied use?

Manual did not say as far as I can tell.

Every 2000 miles on an oil change? Is that something you do once in the spring/start of the new driving season as a matter of routine, or ??? Just curious why the cadence is so high. Even in the DINO OIL days, 3000 miles was the norm, and that was with a 5 quart oil pan; including the filter. With full synthetic it is much higher - e.g., 5k and then some, depending on application.

Paul,

The oil changes pretty much coincide w the driving season. I always change the oil for the winter. When I am getting ready for a long drive and/or racing situation as in going to BG, I change the oil prior to that event. The Castrol GTX I use is not SYNTH oil. I usually throw in 8-9 quarts/change w filter.

"We also found that the NAPA 1324 filter retains eight ounces of oil after the engine is off for 24 hours. The filter is white in color and is made by WIX."

The above is from the H site oil filter recommendations page - Color is off but this is the one I use. Good price as well.

I have been using the 1324 for a while now. Thing is sometimes we get a 1324 that doesn't hold oil in it overnight.

I have found Marc to be very knowledgeable when it comes to the ZR-1, he changed my injectors some time back and car has ran great. He recommends Bosch oil filter and have used them ever since with no problems.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I've cut open many different flavors of filters from my old RX-7 to see how they are constructed. (I know it's not a Z but the filters are cheaper and I don't mind using it as a guinnea pig) K&N is one of the best filters money can buy, hands down. But it's pricey. Wix is my filter of choice for every vehicle I own, because of the construction/build quality and the number of pleats inside (bang for the buck here.) I get mine from Amsoil when I buy a case of 10w40 for my Z.

I agree oil Filtration is obviously a number one concern with any oil filter but the main reason for our talk about the oil filters on the LT5 is which one has the best anti-drain backvalve to help prevent timing chain rattle on some LT5's at startup because of the inverted oil filter design.... The older BOSH oil filters I experience Zero chain rattle but the newer Bosh filters still part number 3401 I get timing chain rattle. I still have a few of the old design with the Orange colored anti-drain backvalve and it works perfect. I have experimented with the new design were the anti-drain backvalve is black and It rattles ever start up. It's like flipping a light switch with the difference..Attachment 17127

Any late 2023 oil filter recommendations? Was about to order a couple from Rock Auto.
