The gauge works. Per the recommendation of the instructions, I used a relay to power the gauge off a custom circuit. It is probably dumb luck but the gauge works out well in the vent. Despite the poor picture taken on my part, it is very legible from behind the vent. This is also where the shift light will come from.

Best thing about this is if I do not want to look at a gauge or have it in my peripheral while just casual cruising, just thumb the vent wheel down and it is hidden completely. Next step is find a decent location to make a hole to snake the wide band wiring through the firewall. So much for waiting until the fall or winter to buy this and install it.
