change color to competition yellow?
Ok I'm looking for thoughts on why to or why not to change color of my red 90 ZR-1 to competition Yellow. I have always wanted a comp yellow 90 Z but with probably 18-20 left out in North America I don't like my chanches any time soon of finding one. I've made my plus and minus list, what thoughts can you add to it?
Plus My car is near perfect, even if I find a yellow it may not be as nice of a car Cost to paint plus cost of my car most likely will be less than what I would pay for a nice Yellow car Lot's of red cars out there and the car will be done properly so if I decide to sell I question if this would hurt the value of the car. I dont see the value of our cars going crazy any time soon Minus I hate to trash the flawless original paint Car will no longer be as manufactured |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
What color is the interior of the Red 1990?
How many miles on your 1990? Any modifications of the 1990? I would advertise for a Yellow ZR-1.....I see you already did that once in July 2016 with no responses.... I would advertise for a yellow 1990 ZR-1 again a few times........not just one time. You never know.....someone may let one go in a trade or outright if the price or trade is right. You say you want a yellow 1990 ZR-1......I assume that means you do NOT want a 1991-1995 Yellow ZR-1? The numbers go from 20s to almost 200. If you do decide to re-paint......document the costs, preparation and painting in a new thread for us  |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
If you do it "right" as you say, it likely won't hurt the value. Could even increase it. Unless it's a garage queen with 100 miles on it, originality doesn't matter to anybody on a C4. But doing it "right" will involve massive disassembly and would likely cost $10K, maybe more. Half the value of the car to change paint from an already desirable color? I get why you want yellow, but...

Re: change color to competition yellow?
I shared my color change experience via PM. My choice was much easier because my car had already gone through a color change (from turquoise to black), and the black was pretty scratched up.
I had been watching for yellow C4's before I bought mine and they don't come up very often. My paint job cost $4,000, but I would expect to have to pay $5k or more. I certainly understand the strong desire to have a car in a special color, especially yellow! I also understand hesitating to change a car that currently has very good paint. Tough decision, but I say go for it! :-) |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
Changing the color on a C-4 today may seem like no big deal.
Certainly it's your car, and you may do as you please and desire. I will simply say that C-2's with a color change lose about 25% of their value in driver quality condition, and 50% or more if show quality. C-3's with similar changes are a bit lower, but not by much. C-4's are still so low in their value cycle, that today it is no big deal, but that will change as the car ages. While selling your car is likely one of the farthest thoughts on your mind, just know that you will be making it difficult to sell at anywhere near the price of an original car. The first question I am asked on most any car is always is it numbers matching, with the second being does it match the paint and trim codes. While I am sure it may not matter to some, it matters to those who search for higher end examples. Good luck with you decision! Marty |

Re: change color to competition yellow?
Thanks all!
No mods bone stock Just under 18k miles Grey interior. Yeah I know not the best combo for resale but I love it I am Specifically looking for a 90 I just like the earlier nose and black belt line and don't like later car seats so I'm shoe horned back into the 20 some available I'll do all tear down so I will be in the 8k for paint and have 20 in the car so all in I think pretty solidly under what I would pay for original yellow |

Don't do it! As mentioned earlier, you can advertise LOTS more and keep you eyes open. Can can call people with yellow cars and try to strike a deal. Plus, IMHO yellow and gray will look goofy. |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
Yeah, I think I'll retract my "Go for it" advice. I didn't realize your car's mileage was so low.
I like Bill's advice to contact yellow car owners and negotiate a deal. Use that $8K you were going to spend on the new paint towards your negotiating. Good luck! |

Have you thought about a wrap? It may cost about 2K but it is removable.

If you go that route, make sure to use architectural grade or the best grade of vinyl it will last longer. Getting the exact color might be a challenge.

Re: change color to competition yellow?
Could you wrap it and have the best of both?

Re: change color to competition yellow?
there's a yellow one here:

Re: change color to competition yellow?
I thought about a wrap but I don't know about 2k for something that looks right. For it to not totally look odd I would have to get jambs done, most prices I have seen for that work nears cost of repaint. Also I looked at the 91 yellow for sale and the airbrush work is not my thing at all so again I would be repainting and trading for a car that might have deeper issues, I've thought about selling mine and buying a higher mile car to paint but other than messing with possible future value I don't see any advantage. I also have posted on other forums and reached out to yellow owners without luck. Patience is the name of the game to get an original I just don't know how much I have and I also love the challenge of a project like this

Re: change color to competition yellow?
Yeah, yellow on a 90 does look great with that belt line, so does quasar and steel blue imo. If there's anything that I've learned about the zr-1 market, patience is the key. You could contact corvette specialists like Roger Judski at Roger's corvette. He could probably help you track down one.

Re: change color to competition yellow?
I think you should paint it.
You've got the base car that you like and have all the problems sorted out. And you'll have brand new paint - with no scratches, chips or dings. This would have been a great choice in the past: Sold for $25K • 1 of 23 made in Yellow • Painted roof and glass roof panels • 4,786 miles https://www.mecum.com/lots/FL0114-17...-corvette-zr1/ https://cdn1.mecum.com/auctions/fl01...72960_1@2x.jpg |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
I really like yellow on a C4. And, I think gray interior goes well with yellow.
If it were me, and I had the means, I would do it :) |

8k for a paint job and it`ll be yellow and gray? You`ll get sick of that very soon.

I do like red, but it is nice to see ZR-1's every once in a while that aren't that color. I might have a tough time changing a lower mile Z to a different color however. In the end, it's your car. |

Re: change color to competition yellow?
My 2 cents is I would keep what you have and advertise. One of mine is a 90 red/black. Nothing special. I want a steel blue or black rose, but i wouldn't change the color. I'll find one or both sooner or later. That's the originalist in me though. I want them the way they came from factory.

Re: change color to competition yellow?
Ok here is an update. I found a Yellow 91 but I think looking at this car has pushed me to paint mine. The car is the right color and does not have crazy miles but on the surface it has issues that will add to its 30k asking price and may have more once seen in person. The car has 31k miles and a NCRS top flight judging award but leather on the seats is subpar to mine and the windshield is delaminating my is crystal clear, stack that on top of it's a 91 so it will not have the black belt line which I think sets the car off. If I could get the car for 23k which i think is more than a fair price it might be worth vs painting mine but I doubt the owner is going to be excited about cutting 7k off his price. I also have another question about colors, does anyone have a picture of a Competition Yellow against a corvette Yellow car which this one is.

The 1990 exterior color chart (ZR-1 Registry) does not show any Competition Yellow but the chart (Color Quantities by year) suggests 23 ZR-1 exterors were Competition Yellow in 1990 and 42 exteriors were Competition Yellow in 1991. |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
In what year did it place in the NCRS? If the owners asking price is 31K and you say it looks like it has issues than I don't think an offer of 23K is bad...
From what your saying you have not seen this car yet in person, correct? I did run into a guy at a car show that owned a 91 in yellow.....Car was not the greatest and the tint of the paint made it look like a sunflower yellow... I agree a 90 with the Black moulding around would set off the paint a little better.....As you know it's a great time to buy and if the owner had any sense he would really consider the offer your thinking of... |
Re: change color to competition yellow?
I think the only yellow offered for C4's (or at least the ZR-1's) was Competition Yellow.
For me (and I know this is a personal, subjective thing), the Competition Yellow wasn't bright enough. I chose a C5 Millennium Yellow. It wasn't an easy decision, but considering the prices of ZR-1's and other things, I figured I should go ahead and paint it the way I wanted it. I plan to keep the car a long time and when I sell it, I wont expect a lot of money for it. Mine has 70k miles. |

The '91 and '92 yellow was more pale, similar to an Easter yellow. All was corrected in time for 1993 production. Regardless, I would love to own a 1990. I don't even mind the '91/'92 yellow on a nicely kept car. |
