1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

Lot # 85 to be sold on Tuesday...mismatched wheels, etc....condition must be pretty rough.

$500 just to bid on a car there, WTF.

Hard to see much from that picture with the exception of the wheels and interior color. The paint color looks to be a dark greeish blue... hard to tell. The last purple 89 went for a 100K at BJ and it had the wrong wheels on it. What price do you think is realistic for this 89 ZR-1 ?

88 & 89 had a color called Dark Blue Metallic, which was an awesome color. I believe they had three of them on the Carcassone Press release trip along with the three Bright Red and three Dark Red cars.

Eric bought that purple one and it was $60k. But it was in incredible condition!

Looks a lot like the car Tyler found at Broward County College in Florida back in July, 2006. If so, the college had repainted the car, but dark blue metallic was probably always the correct color as Jeff points out.

The 89 ZR-1 I was reffering to was from the GM collection and sold at BJ along with the Snake Skinner and the active suspension ZR-1 among others. That happened a while back as I am sure you already know.

I don't care what special color it is. Thats a rough looking car. I don't need another fixer upper.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

The purple 89 ZR-1 was indeed bought by me last year. Those of you who went to the Gathering may have seen it. I wish it was $60K, but it was the higher number listed (without commision and taxes) DONT TELL MY WIFE!

I Was at the auction grounds today and it is #4 that Tyler found. It has C6 front wheels and is almost exactly like the pictures that Tyler took. It has a scrap/salvage title. My purple one was sold on an MSO. The car looks black to me although it was very overcast. It has dark saddle cloth non sport seats. The car should cross the block tomorrow around 6PM AZ time (8ET). I think speed will cover it so tune in. The car is missing a lot of interior trim and the internal BJ notes indicate that it is a Non starter. There was lots of foot traffic around it when I was there so I am guessing it wont go cheap. Stay tuned.... Eric

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

I hope it goes for big cash, because if it goes for $10K I would be kicking myself in the AZZ.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

#4 appears to be dark metallic blue. It has been resprayed with a heavy hand. The rear "Corvette" logo is painted over thickly. The car appears to have been black before that. The door jams are black and the fuel door is black underneath, but that also appears to be a respray as there appears to be red under that. So perhaps #4 was a red/saddle cloth car originally. I hope later today I can get a peak at the SPI. Eric

I am guessing $27,900.....cars are not going for much. A 25K mile GN just went for $18.:dontknow:

It's early on Tuesday, these are not primo cars. The other thing, the bidders have not had a chance to get drunk.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

Ok, for those that say the ZR-1 will not be a collector car....FU. Come on who pays $50K for a beat up prototype that has 3 layers of paint and doesn't even have the matching wheels, unless its a landmark car.

I don't see any L98 prototypes sought after or bringing this kind of cash.....Snakeskinner, Active suspension all $100K+ cars, the Z is something special.

Maybe some day, when I get to be Hans age, I can retire to CA on the money I make selling my Zs.

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

Well, For those of you that may have read between the lines. I was the high bidder on #4. THe car is rough, but not that bad. Lots of little easy stuff. The correct front wheels with flat gatorbacks came with it. Plus I get to keep those 2 fancy C6 wheels! The car will definately need paint (or less paint!). It appears to be originally red. It does not have sport seats and it does not have power seats. It has the non bose radio. and apparently it will start, but the battery was dead. It looked as though GM did a service on the car recently. I will document it as I go. We are very excited. Now on to find out about this one. Eric

Re: 1989 ZR-1 for sale at BJ

Very cool Eric, glad to hear the car went to "one of us" and not to some collector who will stash it away and never be seen again. Would love to see pics of it's current condition before restoration starts.

You don't know much about salvage titles do you.

Come on $200K where does that number come from.

If the original paint on that '89 Z was indeed red, I wonder if maybe it is one of those red press cars that they used to announce the ZR-1 in '89? The ones you always see in the pictures of Z's from '89?

Per Dave McLellan's book the first 20 89 ZR-1s were built in early Feb. All but #16 were driven up to Milford as a shakedown prior to the Geneva unvailing. 15 of the 20 were flown to Frankfurt Germany, 3 at a time on 747s. 5 of the first 20 remained behind for durability, emissions and fuel economy certifications. Way to early to know whether #4 stayed or went, but if I had to guess I would say stayed in Michigan. Why, No Power sport seats, No Bose, Cloth. Not exactly the options you want to show off with the press.
