Oil Filters - Step In

Oil Filter Options:

I can only post 5 or 6 photos in one post. If anyone else has any filters, please post them. It appears that the Mobil 1 filter is not that great for our cars and expensive. Seems the consensus is the Bosch 3401 is popular, available and much less then the M1 oil filter which always seems to be out of stock also. I also like the Wix Filter and the Napa Gold and the PureOne, they all seem like quality filters, not sure about others.

I typically run the Bosch or one of the original PF970s.

The last time I got a "oil change with filter deal" at Advance, there were no Bosch Filters or Mobil 1. I picked up the Purolator PureOne PL 14619. Seems like a really good filter. Anyone have any experience with them?

Here is a photo, yes I know it has to be the ugliest oil filter on the face of the planet.

I have all the PF 970, 970C filters, some retain oil better then others. Mainly looking for all the shelf stuff now.

The PL14619 seems well built and the specs are impressive - its just kinda ugly. Can you show me a picture of the original blue Pure One's? Can you still buy them? Part #? Thanks.

I was using the Bosch 3401 but switched to the FRAM TG3985 after reading the thread posted by Hans linked below.

I bought a few from Rock Auto and then found they were available locally as well. They have a light gray body and black top - I just spray them black and they look fine to me.

I'm with Scott and value Marc H's opinion and research so I bought a boat load of FRAM TG3985 (will also paint when I use on) and Bosch 3401 (using now). I have a lifetime supply from the Rock Auto closeout so I'll just use these until the car or I die.

I typically run the PureOne on Napa Gold (it's a WIX filter) and they have always done well. I've never had the intermittent quality problem like the Bosch or Mobil1 filters.

fram are ok to use now? i thought i remembered reading a study that said they were crap filters and went to bypass almost instantly. I know when i ran one on my car my oil pressure on the gauge was much lower then it was when using a Mobil one filter

I think there's a big difference between the low end orange fram filter and the higher end gray ones being discussed for the LT5.

FWIW...........I thought that I got a lot more ''chain rattle'' on start up when I was using the Mobile 1 filters. I went to the Bosch and it seems a lot better as I don't rmemeber when the last time I heard a ''rattle''.

Kevin,

Totally understood and I thought or assumed that Fram was cheap garbage until I read the information from Marc H. I know there may be a lot of opinions about all of this and I know diddly squat about oil filters so I trust Marc who actually tested stuff for our LT5 and the upside down designed filter and no benefit to him to put all the effort into this:

Re: Oil Filters - Step In

I believe the Mobil filter was the best filter going quite a few years ago other than for the flow-back. I've been using these since I could no longer get the factory ones and have had no issues. The flow-back doesn't matter to me since I had Marc H install a pre-lube system on my car... turn the key on and wait about 10 seconds (much quicker if it hasn't been sitting for days) to pressurize and start her up, no rattles and purrs like a kitten from the first second running... love it!!:)

Is there any filters nowadays that out performs the Mobil filter other than the back flow on it?

Has anyone tried Amsoil filters?

I'm all ears on this one too. I was going to buy the AMSOIL preluber after watching a Two Guys Garage years ago and then AMSOIL stop making it. I know there are others like Canton Racing, etc. but sounds like a great thing to have on our motors with oil start up, upside down filters, etc.

It's an original "pre-luber"... http://www.pre-luber.com/index.htm

I got the marine version back in 1995 and had Marc H install it. He wired it to the ignition so when you turn it forward to accessory the pump runs, once I have pressure on the gauge I turn the key forward to the start position and the pump automatically cuts out and the engine fires immediately and runs smooth as can be. Haven't had any problems as is usual with all work done by the "ZR-1 Specialist". Another benefit of a smooth start is no rough idle tranny rattle due to the fidanza.

If I get a chance tomorrow I'll post a few pictures.

Would love to see the photos and maybe Marc could do a write up on the install?

Thanks for sharing. Having just built my motor and not even broken in yet, I would love to have this added protection and wear reduction for the investment.
