New Owner #1581 White/Red
Hello folks.. I just wanted to say hello and say that I have enjoyed lurking for some time and finally got the courage to make my first post.
All the cards seemed to fall into place for me to buy this car: it was close to my house so i was able to go see it before bidding (ebay), my bank financed it (huge), it was in very good condition for its age (fixers uppers aren't always the deal they seem to be), and oh yeah, it sold for $8900 (too good to be true, but too good to pass up..so I bid and won). It's not close to perfect, but I look forward to making her proud again with your help. Well, I have to eat some crow..first, I said I would never own another manual trans car, but I confess, I'm starting to like it..a lot..and second, I was never crazy about the 91 interior..and well, it too is growing on me..I do wish it had a pass airbag however. Overall, I couldn't be happier. So, crow eaten :) Here's a link until I fiigure out how to post directly. http://s1096.photobucket.com/albums/g328/sirlancair1/ Sincerely Sam |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
good to have you here sam. I love white c4's and zr-1's even more. pull up a chair and enjoy the permagrin.
As for the no PS airbag, i don't see that as a big deal. we lived for years having no airbags then only ds airbags, and I've taken the Morgan cars approach to driving with or without airbags, don't crash :) |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Welcome, this is the place for help with fixer uppers..youre just going to love the car!

Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Thank you all for the warm welcome! It has been a very positive experience so far. First, here are some pictures of the car ...I haven't figured out how to post them directly yet. Most of the pictures are from the sellers ebay ad that I downloaded and a few others are the first day she came home. Don't run away when you see her mileage :) It really doesn't drive like it has that many miles.. Still I think the price was almost a gift. I have NO complaints.
http://s1096.photobucket.com/albums/g328/sirlancair1/ I will follow up with problems and quirks she has, but for the most part, it's a solid runner. Thanks again! Sam |

Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Okay, what I know about the car besides that it has 132k miles...not too much actually. It has had two owners. The first is from McKeesport Pa. I believe I have the last name, but only the initials of the first and middle name. He, or she owned the car for 20k miles and I believe it was sold in 96 to someone in St Petersburg Fl who drove it, uh quite a bit but also did a nice job of either replacing the interior or keeping it really nice. I'm betting the seats are recovered...they just look too good for that many miles.
The seller put a Haibeck chip to have the injectors default to on because the key switch is broken. Not sure if the check engine light was on before that but it is now. Unfortunately I have no other records of maintenance. The oil looks great, antifreeze looks great and engine overall looks to be well maintained. Here are some of the issufes: maybe I should start a new thread..but for now: Tach doesn't work, bounces from <0 to >8k Interior light flickers on while I'm driving. steering wheel is well warn, so is shift knob. I'd like to fix this one soon. service wheel sensor light comes on. service engine light stays on. right turn signal doesn't work right...problem with lever on steering wheel bigger stuff: KNOCK at idle when car is warm. This goes away just off of idle. It also appears to have coincide with a miss. Scared the crap out of me first time I heard it.. Sounds like a rod knock..but I thought that would be at all rpms instead of just idle. stumbles on acceleration. secondary pump not turning on secondary not holding vacuum (going to the engine) Weatherstripping..doors, pillars..but I knew that. Paint on back bumper is slightly yellowed and theres a 4" scratch on the left corner of the bumper. Paint overall is acceptable, but definitely not what she deserves. That's about all I have found. I'll keep you posted. Meanwhile I've been busy reading all I can to learn what makes her tick. Pun intended :) |

Secondaries will not work with the SES light Keen parts sells the latex weatherstripping for the pillars, I have the A pillar piece but have not installed it yet |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Thanks Jeff.
I made the comment to the seller when I test drove it that it didnt feel like the secondaries were opening and he said "no, they are definitely opening and that it was slower before the Haibeck chip" He seemed to think that the chip allowed the secondaries to kick in, even with the ses light on>>>is that not the case? If they are not, then does that also mean that the secondary injectors are not firing? Why don't I start a new thread. so others can benefit from the search engine. |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Call Kevin @ www.keenparts.com for weatherstrip We have seen this latex and it's VERY close to OEM, plus half price!
Call John @ FIC www.fuelinjectorconnection.com get Stainless Steel Injectors $650 for the complete set. Call Jerry @ www.jerrysgaskets.com for gaskets needed for injector replacements  David |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Nice, another white/red Z! Really nice price too, for what you got!
I've got a '90 white/red Z with 140K that I've been working on for the past two years. Mine was in much rougher shape than yours is, but it looks a lot better now than it did. |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Thanks for the links David and Thanks for the comments everyone.
After seeing the car in person, I was prepared to bid 12k for the car and that's the number I bid. Imagine my surprise when it didnt break 9k and there was NO reserve. I had to pinch myself. The seller actually got the car for 6k at auction as I recall, so he didn't lose money. I didn't notice the noise until I got home and did a hot restart...and heard that dreadful knock...HORROR struck until I read some posts on here that set my more at ease. I can't wait to start getting my hands dirty. Kind of afraid to drive it too much because of the noise. Don't want to cause damage by running it lean.. if it's not already damaged. I will be looking to you for you help in the near future. Thanks again! Sam |

service wheel sensor light comes on. I'm not sure if it works the same for your car but on my 90 I can just yank all 4 sensors and not have a problem. will have to wait for verification service engine light stays on. Pull the codes and let us know what they are KNOCK at idle when car is warm. This goes away just off of idle. It also appears to have coincide with a miss. Scared the crap out of me first time I heard it.. Sounds like a rod knock..but I thought that would be at all rpms instead of just idle. injectors plugs wires...it's one of the three stumbles on acceleration. secondary pump not turning on secondary not holding vacuum (going to the engine) you've got a vacuum leak Paint on back bumper is slightly yellowed and theres a 4" scratch on the left corner of the bumper. Paint overall is acceptable, but definitely not what she deserves. find a good detailer in your area...autopia.org has a list, if not let me know and I'll see who i can find for you. also noticed that your motor is a little dark, and you're missing the rear plate frame I'd keep an eye open if one pops up for sale. it happens with age but if you feel froggy you can get it redone. Sorry I can't help you with the rest. |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
^^^ yeah, the knock could be a side effect of an old injector or ign. miss coupled to the usual wear and tear associated with the dual mass flywheel. It sounds terrible if the idle is rough. does it knock a tad when you turn off the engine?
Mine went away when I put in new injectors. |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Kevin, you're making this too easy for me...I'm a rookie, I'm supposed to get some hazing and earn my wings..
You are too kind. I can't wait to get home and start addressing some of the issues. Yeah, that license plate really bothers me. Are there any options that look good short of finding an original frame? I like the idea of redoing the plenum. I am going to tackle that when I do the injectors. The door switch is definitely the problem with the light..it goes off as I pull the door handle closed tight when i drive down the road. I didn't realize it was adjustable....cool! thanks sam |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Mike...There are a few noises. One is a rattle at shut down the other is more of a knock, not like the bad gas rattle when you accelerate, but a single knock that coincides with the miss, and it's only at idle. Scary sound.
As I said though, If I bring up the idle a little to around 1200 (im guessing with no tach), the knock goes away completely and the engines smooths out with no unusual noises. thanks for you input. sam |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
see how close you are to south georgia corvettes. aaron will take care of ya, but it may cost ya

you could try pulling a plug wire to see if the knock follows that..it should get worse. a bearing problem usually gets quiter when removing the ign from the cylinder in question. External sources would be louder running on 7 holes- easy to check. |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Good info mike, I'll try removing the plug wires one at at time and see if that knock rears it's ugly head. What causes the knock if it is indeed a spark miss. It doesn't make sense to me..I can see preignition would do that, but with no spark, there'd be no ignition, let alone preignition, right? hmm

Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Welcome to the club. I like the white/red combo.
I got mine with 80,000 and have replaced the plugs, wires, coils, and injectors. I can highly recommend FIC for injectors if needed. I have the stainless steel set and got all of my soft parts from Jerry's Gaskets also comes highly recommended. You will find that everyone here is very helpful and friendly. So just ask away and standby for plenty of help. |

David, I will be probably tackle this job in the next couple of weeks. I appreciate the recommendations for injectors and gaskets..All this help sure takes the edge off not having to wonder what is available and what isn't.
Jeff, It's hard NOT to be intimidated by that plenum or rather, what's under it. I'm more afraid of breaking something than the actual intricacies of the process. I'm confident that you guys are going to be here when I have questions. Knowing of the zr1net's willingness to share information in this forum influenced my decision to buy a high miler without reservations. Andrew, I guess you already got your answer, but I wondered the same thing.. Apparently not :) I'm liking this! Part of buying a car that you don't expect and makes the purchase that much more special. very cool....thanks all. Sam |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Don't worry Sam, we'll set ya straight....Just wait till you go to the gathering one year, that's a whole new level of crazy

That is a smokin deal on a clean car.It surprises me how well these cars age and still look fairly clean. To the OP,the small triangle pieces missing from your seat controls can be found at Corvette Central I think.

Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
Sam, just one admonishment about doing a test for spark......our ignition control boxes, the DIS box mounted to the underside of the plenum, do not like for plug wires to be disconned while the motor is running. I would suggest taking the long way with an assistant and remove one wire at a time using an old spark plug start the motor & observe the spark intensity, shut down, then on to the next, etc & so on. It's not that the box is gonna puke on you when you pull wires as the motor is running but the box doesn't like for that method to be used too much. JAFWIW.
 Tom |
Re: New Owner #1581 White/Red
when gordon checked my wires when I had a miss he just pulled them while the car was running.
