X-Pipe
Hi guys!!!!
How are you??? I have a B&B exhaust system on my 1990 Zr-1. I'll like to remove the resonator and put an X-Pipe. Someone of you know where i can find it? Someone of you have this X-Pipe on his Z??What's the sound??? Thanks in advance to everyone help me!!!! Have a good day!! Max |
Re: X-Pipe
Hi Max:
My '91 has Stainless Works headers and a B&B (first gen) system with a B&B X-pipe instead of the resonator. With the headers being a big part of it, the system has the dreaded drone in the 1600-1900 rpm range. It's also the least back pressure exhaust system available with a large power gain because if it. IMO If you want quiet, keep the resonator. If you want max power, get a B&B x-pipe. |

So, you say that with X-pipe the sound is so much??I listen a Zr-1 on youtube at idle with xpipe and the sound is fantastic, here the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A8mWSAed9g0 Is your sound the same??? I try to see B&B website but i don't find the X-pipe. Do you have a picture of your X-pipe?My email is: rommas76@yahoo.it Thanks in advance!!!! Max |
Re: X-Pipe
I have headers on my car. Headers always make a car sound better. My car sounds better than that car, but louder also.
Contact B&B, tell them which system you have and that you want to change your resonator for an X pipe and they will sell you the X-Pipe. They don't have a separate listing for it, but they sell lots of them. No pics, or sound recordings... sorry. Good Luck! |

Re: X-Pipe
You can also get the Stainless Works X pipe for our cars and supposedly a direct replacement on the B&B:
http://www.stainlessworks.net/produc...rossovers.html Hopefully someone will chime in an confirm with their experience. Best wishes. Craig:cheers: |
Re: X-Pipe
the Stainless works X pipe has changed:
http://www.zr1.net/forum/showpost.ph...0&postcount=45 there is a baffle in it now |
Re: X-Pipe
I had the later version B&B on my '95 and drone was significantly lessened when I swapped out the resonator with B&B X-Pipe.
I installed SW headers and RT cats at the same time, and while it was certainly louder out the rear I had less drone in the cabin. |
Re: X-Pipe
i would save a ton of cash and get one of the 3 in narrow x pipes from summit . if you awant more quiet 3 in exhaust try the dyno max super turbo 3 in with dual exits. best of both worlds and a lot less costly .if you want to hear what a 3 in with an xpipe and those mufflers sound like go to the personal racing stories section . and look for the go pro thread .

Re: X-Pipe
Massimilliano,
Ciao. I just went through a similar change on my car and removed the MFlow Xpipe/resonator combination and replaced with Stainless Works Xpipe (baffling removed). Let me ask why you want to remove the B+B resonator? If its for the sound, that's one thing. If its for power, I'll suggest don't bother unless you get the car retuned. |
Re: X-Pipe
If you order from Stainless Works tell them you don't want the baffling inside,if they won't order X-pipe from B&B or do a search for other X-pipes

Hi Dom!!!! I want remove the resonator only for sound, i'm notinteresting in power!!! I write to B&B and they answer to me that don't sell the X-Pipe. I think to buy it from Stainless Works...when i have some money!!!!;-) |

They'll want to charge you $100 extra for no baffling. That's what I was told. |
Re: X-Pipe
Max,
Sorry to intrude on your post, but I have a few questions or comments for the group. Why does SW put a baffle in the X pipe? It sounds like that defeats the purpose and why charge someone $100 to not have the baffle? Why does B&B not want to sell someone their X pipe; we all know they make one for our cars and I hope it does not have a baffle. If I can't pass emissions here in Japan to register my Z, then I want to put my headers back on, no cats and X pipe to replace resonator for max performance (with tune) and best sounds (especially having cams). I will just get temp plate and drive it periodically and not give a crap about polluting, sound decibels, drone since they make it so difficult to register. Like Scott said, if it will reduce the drone then that is plus. |

As for the SW X, I thought I had bought what Paul, and Pete, and Al had gotten. When I got the Xpipe, which came within 2 days of ordering, I saw the baffles insides and I have posted pics of them (http://zr1.net/forum/showpost.php?p=126147&postcount=67). Baffles have since been tossed. Al installed my Xpipe in place of the MFlow X+resonator setup. While he was at it, he removed the baffles. A true ZR-1 brudda! So I now have Watson 1 7/8" headers followed by the SW X and backed by MFlow mufflers. It is louder than before but not harsher. It is also DEEPER. You can hear the cams now. Not radical but a definite beat to them. At cruise with a steady or slight off throttle, its pretty mellow. I can hear the radio fine. There is some drone when motor is under load at 1500rpm. However, my plan is to out in 3.90s or 4.10s in rear which should help especially since my 19" Z06 wheels reduce the current 3.45 gear to about a 3.00. Still investigating Z06 tip+flappers on Dynomax UltraFlows. |

Thanks for sharing and great info. It sounds like you might have the perfect set up or getting there. I think I'm stuck with my B&B mufflers and definitely will get an X pipe without baffles be it B&B or SW. I don't want to try any of the others and looking for a direct fit. This is good news (not about the baffle). |

Re: X-Pipe
I have the B&B Xpipe and it has no baffles. It is also long and smooth in the design, rather than those squashed looking pipes. I bought it in place of their resonator when I purchased a cat back.

Scott, I think that is same thing I went through years ago in conversation with one of the Boat brothers, not Billy (Michael?) and back then it was $275 and should have just bought it then. Hopefully I am still on file so I can get one from B&B. I'll have to try to call them on Monday. |
Re: X-Pipe
Why is everything so darn difficult?
I called Stainless Works early this AM my time and see they have a sale for $315 for the X pipe. When I asked him about the baffles inside he said he will check with Tech and why they have that as well my query to sell me one without and how much? I really don't see the purpose other than they are trying to quiet it down, but if there is a loss of power as I imagine then I'm not interested. I imagine there is also a loss of sound too then I might as well just keep the resonators. In addition, I am waiting to see if they will ship to me with other than FEDEX/UPS too. On another note, here is the email traffic from Billy Boat Exhaust. So, at least I know they will sell me one for $340, but will not ship to me other than with UPS or FEDEX to Japan (probably about $100) my guess to ship it: -----Original Message----- From: Bob Pullisi [mailto:bob@bbexhaust.com] Sent: Tuesday, December 06, 2011 6:15 AM To: HAWAII ZR-1 Subject: RE: Sales Question Hello Craig we have a very hard time shipping to a APO and we don't do USPS all of our packages are to large for them thanks Bob. Costumer service my friend in the U.S. is not the same anymore. Craig if you ever get the X-pipe you should find a place in Japan to copy the X-pipe,probably cost alot less. Maybe a little competition might rattle there cage. Pete |
Re: X-Pipe
my SW X-Pipe is straight through...no baffles...just two 3" pipes merging together to make an X. They barely touch.
|
Re: X-Pipe
I hear you on that and it sure does make it confusing. If I receive an X pipe with a baffle in it I'll go crazy.
Pete, That would be great to have it made here, but from my experience everything is so expensive. Dyno tune starts are $1200 US!!!! I might check a shop here like this one that I was in communication with about cats, but it was crazy expensive: http://www.suruga-speed.co.jp/ They are an exhaust factory and they just don't have muffler shops around like we do in the US with one off stuff being very expensive. I am just waiting for the shipping quote from Stainless Works and if total is around $350 then not too bad. Thanks for all the input and sorry to highjack this post to the OP. Craig |
Re: X-Pipe
craig , did you know that summit sells a narrow 3 in x pipe for about 85-90 it can be made to be a bolt in affair as the center to ce3nter on the pipe are within 1/2 in of your existing setup .

Thanks for the info and I would consider that, but I really like to do things on my own and would do this at the auto crafts shop on a lift. That sounds great, but just need to see what you are talking about that makes this easy to install without needing a muffler shop. Do you have a link or part number? |

Thanks for the info guys. I don't have more money than time, but I really do need simplicity and will keep it stainless as well as direct fit. Still waiting for my shipping cost from SW; no replies from B&B about FEDEX cost so it sounds like they don't want to work with me.
