Got Lucky tonite
No, Not that Lucky..... Settle down.
Finally got some time off and started reassembling my 91 from repairing my starter solenoid this spring. Got the Inj Housings torqued down, installed the new Fuel Injectors and rails, was installing the retaining clips on the Fuel Inj to rails. Last one going on, #8 secondary when my fat fingers fumbled and away it went down into the bowels of the motor. #@^%&**^$, started looking around with the trouble light, I could just see the edge of it down alongside the starter. Out with my trusty long handled forceps, Ahah,,,,,, I managed to push it completely under the starter. $%^&#$%@,,,, So out with a piece of wire, twist and bend it,,,, go fishing in the dark.... No Joy..... Son ofa Biatch,,, Don't tell me I'm going to have to strip everything to get the freaking starter out again.... Sit down, have a smoke, Figured I would be making a trip to the Chev Dealer tomorrow, should be a common part, but what are the chances of being in stock???? Probably not good, with My luck. Go to get up and notice my long handled blow gun on the bench, Hmmmm..... Managed to get the head of the blow gun down the hole in front of the starter where the secondary vacuum switch used to reside. Couple of really good blast of air and I heard a light metal sounding thing ricocheting around the engine and then the sound of it hitting the concrete on the floor.... Success. OK, where did the little bugger go now? A few minutes crawling around looking under everything found it snuggled up against the inside of a tire. CAREFULLY installed it this time. Enough for tonite, mixing a cocktail..... |

Thank heaven for small miracles.

Re: Got Lucky tonite
I hear ya. You got lucky!
I lost a 6" long ratchet handle for my 1/4" drive socket set - slipped out of my hand and disappeared between the tunnel and the bell housing while attempting to tighten the DIS connector at the back of the motor. It never hit the floor, but in spite of me climbing under to look, use a loop of string to swipe the top of the bell housing, a couple hours round and round again in all...I never found it! It just vaporized! And, a black hole for long tube header bolts is the pocket formed by the four pipes where they join the collector section. (ask me how I know!:o) |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
Don't you just hate it when a small bolt or socket falls into the valley and
a) you just finished bolting the plenum down b) it finds its way under the starter |

Re: Got Lucky tonite
Simple Murphy's Law geometric principle for finding stuff - that actually DOES make it to the floor...
Draw a line from front right tire to rear left tire, and from front left to rear right. Where they intersect, 'X' marks the spot http://www.zr1.net/forum/images/icons/icon10.gif |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
I keep an articulated extending magnet w an LED light built into the head. Perfect for this type of search and rescue mission.

Re: Got Lucky tonite
Well, It's Alive!!!!!
Got everything buttoned up, filled with antifreeze. Hooked up the battery, and it started just like I was driving it yesterday. Absolutely smooth, no leaks, no codes, no problems so far. Left the rad cap off while it was warming up, until the bubbles quit coming. The snow is starting to pile up pretty good, don't think I could make it back up the driveway, if I was to try and go for a spin. So just ran it until the oil temp started to register, then shut down. |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
Congrats! How does the Powdercoat look?

Yeah - I got some phone time from Jerry - thanks to him for that... I might regret not doing any more than I have, but now I won't be afraid to dig in, and worry about dirt contamination... Can't wait to hear my own twister spool up soon here. Tune BEFORE mods is my rule. Gotta' have baseline specs first; otherwise you never know what's wrong afterward! |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
Lets see some pics, and your smart not driving it in the snow

Re: Got Lucky tonite
Ok, Here's the culprit that started it all: $3.00 set of contacts....
http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7e65ac92.jpg My Shop; I need more room.. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...psc1140b84.jpg My 91. (Sorry, not very good lighting) http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps348463bf.jpg The motor, Ported Intake and IH's with Powder Coat by LGAFF; Very nice stock looking colour. Topped off with the Mercruiser tag on the map sensor Thanks Lee for your excellent work and all your help. The heads were bore matched to the intakes and the secondaries removed. A new chip was burned to run all the injectors all the time and a bunch of other tweaks I know nothing about.. S.S. injectors and S.S. bolt kit from Jerry's Gaskets. The car already had the SLP intake, Long tube headers, full 3 inch exhaust, and a light weight flywheel with heavy duty clutch. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps01a585f4.jpg The current Weather situation; Forecast calls for SHITTY..... http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...psa0107ae0.jpg |

Holy COW BF - those RC planes are huge! I don't guess they have Cox PeeWee .049's under the cowling??? Lycoming 's maybe? How many channels do they run? Is that a De Havilland? Do your kids ride in them? |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
OK there BF; time to 'fess up here - you're one of the PP's that bought the remnants of Cox?
Any Y/T vids of your birds in the air? |

Re: Got Lucky tonite
Schrade; Not sure which plane your referring to, but Yes there are a couple of De Havillands in there, a Super Chipmunk with a 62 inch wingspan and a Beaver with a 76 inch wing. Both have .9 cubic inch glow fuel engines and have 6 channel radios.
The Chipmunk has lot's of time on it and has not been an easy life for it. http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...pscf74e869.jpg Don't remember what I did, probably something stupid, probably about 10 years ago now. But I rebuilt it and it's still flying today; http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps529a30f4.jpg |

Re: Got Lucky tonite
Is it P40 or P38. I always thought the Flying Tiger stuff was 38's. I loved the
teeth on the lower engine cowl. Never actually got it to takeoff, then the fuel ate away at the plastic wings until it fell apart. I was left w just the engine and I built an engine mount out of my Erector set and run the motor w battery and fuel. Imagine doing that in a 4 room railroad apartment in Brooklyn. Noisy. |

I think the P38 was the dual fin lightning the P40 was the war hawk. Yep thats the one I have tri bladed bugger remember once during the spring start procedure (remember that) not removing the finger fast enough to have the cox av gas get into the wound. That will learn ya pretty fast lol That happened to mine as well so using coat hangers the wheels and alum cans to mount the engine I built a rear engine powered prop car that terriorized the neighborhood. http://richard-seaman.com/Aircraft/A...ampler/P38.jpg http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...wk_airshow.jpg |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
Goldy is correct, the P-38 was the twin engine twin boom Fighter, the P-40 was the only front line Fighter the USA had in any numbers when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbour. Altho the P-40 could not dogfight with a Zero, it was tough as hell and nothing could match it's speed in a dive. The AVG in China, The Flying Tigers, learned this early on and were very effective knocking the Zero's out of the sky.
There were better, faster and more publicized Planes that came later, but the Good Old P-40 workhorse did the bulk of the work in the early years. |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
Yes the P-38 Lightning. I remember it now. Didn't they also call it the
"Black Widow"? The P-51 always struck me as the racehorse of prop fighters. |
Re: Got Lucky tonite
The P51 was indeed the race horse of the pack. However for the pacific campaign my favorite was the F4U Corsair. Loved Baa Baa Black Sheep before it was called The Black Sheep Squadron. Pappy Boyington was a stud....

Re: Got Lucky tonite
It is built with mostly balsa, the covering will be a Plastic heat activated/ heat shrink film in an Olive Drab with light brown camo spots painted on.
The gear is electric rotating retracts, tail wheel also retracts with a mechanical linkage. It has a YS 91 glow engine that is Supercharged and fuel injected, I believe it puts out around 3.5 hp @ 13,000 rpm. The Plane weights in at about 9 lbs. Not a bad power/weight ratio. |
