1/2 Mile shootout today!
The Phoenix returns to the scene of her greatest episode today to soar again!
Good luck to all running today, and hope to see as many as possible out there to support fellow ZR-1'ers! http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...pscfddab3b.jpg |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Great fun...Best part? I DIDN'T BREAK NUTTIN!!!=D>
Just 4 ZR-1s came to play yesterday: Al was the big dawg with his 441 beast, Bob Banks, Dominic, and me. Weather was perfect, except it got into the mid 80s w/ some humidity vs. last year's overcast and in the 50s. Honestly, after all the work getting her repaired and painted, I was had a little anxiety in the pit of my stomach as I intentionally lined up in that same infamous lane that was so disastrous last year. At the light I made a vigorous start but I let up to make an exploratory/shake-down pass: be damn sure I knew where the finish line was - driving toward the early morning sun, as it were, finishing at a mild 133.x mph. On my second run I was paired up with Bob. Our motors were about even, power wise (510 ish) but he was rowing with 4.10s and mine was the stock 3.45s. On the heals of that recent forum thread discussion about rear gears and which had the advantage in what circumstances, I was eager to see how the two cars would perform. Quick on the draw, Bob got a couple car lengths on me at the line. And he got another length by the time I shifted into 2nd. That 4.10 gear was workin' for him, no doubt! But, at the big end, I was still in 4th and Bob had shifted to 5th and the gap was shrinking - pretty much exactly as expected. Bob did cross the finish line ahead of me at (I think he said) 138(?) mph, where the Phoenix turned in my best at 144.23 mph. One pass does not a trend make, but as I said, it was interesting to compare two cars with reasonably close setup except for rear gearing. Oh...and those Hawk HPS pads worked great - especially if applied!:o Temperatures were on the rise by mid morning, and I felt I turned in a good pass. AND! Nothing broken - so good 'nuff!! Dom sprung an oil leak, somewhere in the vicinity of the oil filter/cooler region and had to pull out of the racing after only one shake-down pass. Hope he lets us know what it was. That left Al and his 441 BEAST! http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...psb099d8c7.jpg On every pass that I saw him make, that monster was having problems getting hooked well into 3rd gear, and still turned in a 159.xx mph. There was a suspected problem with the track's equipment, but Bob and I had to leave before seeing Al try once again to break into the 160s! Hope he made it! Maybe he'll chime in?? All in all it was a fun time. It was an opportunity to see what difference the winter mods made to last year's runs. I still have the stock TB bores and had hoped I could get it to 63mm and get those restrictive Magnaflow muffs replaced with the Dynamax 17228s before this run. Well, maybe by next time? One of "THEM"!:  As it happened, I ran into a "Joe" feller from the FBI's nemesis the "Fast Glass" Chicago Corvette car club. He came over to gaze at the LT5 and remarked how well "those cars run!" He went on to say that "a group of those guys beat us again last fall at the (Crown Point Corvette Club) 1/4 mile shootout" and an instant later saw the ZR-1 NetRegistry embroidery on the shirt I was wearing, and his expression told that he realized I was part of that club. "Are you...?" he stammered. I told him I was, but the real damage at those events wasn't done by my car, but 'a few like that one over there', pointing to Al's white rocket. He remembered at last year's 1/2 mile run a certain red ZR-1 running off the end of the track. It was my turn to be humble... We did see Robert DeMarco and his Amy there, and a host of his other beautiful family members there. Got to see the little grandson "Tony" again (who rode "shotgun" with Robert during the Mountain Run and some more of you met at the BG gathering). It was great fun, and a chance for a few of the FBI warriors to gather to spread their wings a bit more! But, as last year showed, far as forced induction goes..."IF YOU AIN'T BLOWIN, YOU AIN'T GOIN!!" The forced induction guys showed the way home again. Sure wish Marc could have been there. Would love to see how his ZR1 would have run! |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
I have a couple of Al's runs on vid that will be posting shortly. As Paul said, I never made a second run. Mustang driver behind me spotted oil puddle as I moved the car up after first run. We're pretty sure that it's the oil sensor in that god forsaken spot that no human can reach. We checked oil level and Bob Banks was good enough to give me a quart to top things off for the ride home. Other than a bit of smoke, it looks like no harm done. When I got my time slip, I thought I had done a 135. Wasn't until I got home that I read it more carefully and realized I had run a 141 out of the box. Over-revved it in 3rd hitting the fuel cutoff before I shifted it. So probably lost some momentum there.
Some of you may know Matt Farah from Smoking Tire. He was announcing the races. When Al's car was headed down the track Farah said how much he liked the ZR-1 and that Al's car was one strong C4. But he also mistakenly said the motor was developed by Mercury Marine. Looks like the fastest NA was a Vengence Racing C5Z @171. A Viper and GTR TIED FOR TOP DOG yesterday @213. Let's face it, these are not cars your driving to Home Depot to pick up a bag of mulch. Weather conditions were good but humid especially in the first runs. Fog earlier in the morning which burned off later on so MPH got better. Probably some better traction also with warmer track surface. Come on Frank, bring that baby over in October. |

As for the white C5Z, I ran against him on my first pass. It was wicked sounding at the line, and he pulled away the entire pass. Might have been FI, but I don't know, but was waaay up the HP ladder, for sure! Well...October? Hmmm.... If I can get around to the mods in time, I may run then too. But, if not, and you DO run, I'll be there to see it! Hopefully some others with the big guns can make it too, like Bob G and Kevin and Marc!:dancing |

[QUOTE=Paul Workman;206113].......On my second run I was paired up with Bob. Our motors were about even, power wise (510 ish) but he was rowing with 4.10s and mine was the stock 3.45s. One pass does not a trend make, but as I said, it was interesting to compare two cars with reasonably close setup except for rear gearing.....[Quote] Paul is right--I ran 138, exactly what I ran last year. As Paul and I discussed it, we concluded that shifting into fifth does slow me down some, but I think the real reason is that I short shift a bit. Using the tach I shift around or just under 7,000 where as Paul has a calibrated shift light and shifts at 7,200 (He has moved up his rev limiter to 7,500 he said; mine is still stock at 7,200 I believe). I may well be shifting as low as 6,800 depending on accuracy and lag of the tach. Since Paul's car is almost identical to mine in power, my guess is that the driver should take most of the blame for being the club slow guy. I suspect that an extra 400 rpms on each shift would put me into the 140s even with a shift to fifth. Maybe another time. And congrats to Al for his 160 run. I know he could do it. Very impressive. And other than Dom's small oil leak nothing broke, so all in all it was a good day with great weather. Hope the leak problem is not anything major.--Bob |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
I was there for the magical 160mph run. It was a sight to see when the MPH sign flashed 160.47. It was nice to see Al's Z spank all comers that were in the same class.
I am going to talk to Blake and see if he would create a third class. NA manufacturer equipped. While Al's Car is heavily modified it does have the original motor from pan to hat (Plenum in our case) and the original electronics. |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
I'm having an issue uploading my iPhone .mov files to Photobucket. Anybody got a solution. Have 2 vids of Al's car.

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
This is a rolling start, correct?
Can you break out if you are rolling too fast? |

No you can't break out it's not set-up like 1/4 mile runs. Al. |

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Not to mention, there were some really rare exotics there - eye candy for any car lover.
The GT40 is one of my favorite cars. This supercharged Ford GT40 is owned by a guy that also has a ZR-1 with, he says, less than 500 miles. "I bought it as an investment". That hasn't worked out so well tho" he said. http://i185.photobucket.com/albums/x...psb7d0fe7b.jpg Also there was a Lambo and a Ferrari 458, and a 560 hp Ford V8 powered Sunbeam there that was fun to watch. I spoke with the owner - really nice, down to earth guy. Racing or watching, these 1/2 mile events are fun and exciting to watch! |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
A completely different crowd than what you find at the drag strip. Machinery is much more sophisticated. People aren't putting junk up on the track that they just slapped together. At these speeds, you'd be toast.

Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Here's the note AMS wrote regarding their impressions of the event. After reading this, it makes you want to see a TT LT-5 line up and watch some eyes get wide. If Al did 160 on ALL MOTOR, imagine a TT w NOS like these GTRs run.
"HOT AND HUMID but what weekend. First and foremost congrats to all of our customers who put down fantastic times in that swamp heat this weekend! * Mike, your car is a F'n animal and you sir are one of the coolest and collected guys I know. 213.0682mph is FLYING! 8.8@182 in the 1/4 on the V-box......WOW! * Gidi, If there is a more passionate GT-R owner out there I haven't met him yet. 210mph in 2640ft... Incredible. you must of made 8-9 passes. You battled a weird Syvecs issue all weekend but thankfully we got it resolved. Too bad it was too late to get one last run in. * Matt's ALPHA 9 on 100 octane was doing work all weekend. He was hot lapping that thing to 175mph pass after pass after pass. * Ray's ALPHA 9 on pump gas I'm told touched 170mph which is fantastic for a pump gas ALPHA 9 * Nick's Ronin blasted off a very stout 175mph pass on Saturday before being ousted by the monsoon that rolled on us. * Brian's TSM build ALPHA 12 juuust missed the 200 mark with a 199. In those conditions that's outstanding! * CMC's police cruiser 3.8 ALPHA 12 with a TSM E85 tune put down a 200mph pass on Saturday. REALLY stout considering the extra weight from all the Police lights lol. * Our shop ALPHA 10 997 Porsche put down a very respectable 183mph pass. The Nth Moto guys are class acts and that car is honestly a rolling work of art. We are a hard group to impress but they did just that. In regards to the times being identical down to the ten thousandth of a second its a bit hard to swallow but what can you do. Both cars deserve honors for what they did. The GT-R crowd can take comfort in the fact that it seems the only real competition we have comes in the form of twin turbo V10's... I will take that On to Omega: SpecV, Omega has ran an Air to water cooler for a LONG time. We have stated that several times on here. Saturday and Sunday's weather was crap...but it was crap for everyone else too. Ivan went out to make what would be his only pass for the event. The car was MOVING. At the 2050ft mark at about 38psi it hit 210mph. Unfortunately right at that point she kicked off an intercooler pipe and it took out the fender so the run was over and he coasted to 204mph at the stripe. With 600ft more to accelerate we can only speculate to what number it would of hit. Upon returning to the pit Ivan noticed that the car was pushing a bit of coolant. Between that and the IC pipe our day was over. Thankfully we had some customer cars willing to carry the torch and boy did they ever! This is part of the process when you push boundaries. If it was easy everyone would do it. The good news is we have a great team here that are as motivated as they come ready to tackle anything that comes at them. She will be back out better than ever before you know it. Thank you again to everyone that came out drivers and spectators alike. What a phenomenal weekend. Now I need to go see if we can get a group buy on some Aloe Vera gel.... It's a lobster net at AMS! Eric" |
Re: 1/2 Mile shootout today!
Some additional info on the TT Viper that took the marbles away from AMS GTRs
Nth Moto's twin turbo Dodge Viper that took home all the trophies this past weekend. Some facts you may find interesting... • Full weight car plus a 10 pt NHRA certified roll cage. • The car runs oiled cone style air filters at all times. • Race maintenance consists only of detailing the car, adding ice to the intercooler system, warming the tires, pulling data logs, raising the boost, and waiting for the next round. • No component failures since the car was completed. • No nitrous. • No slicks or cheater slicks. Rear tires are real 18" DOT drag radials. • AEM Infinity ECU, traction control, and boost control is out of this world amazing! No other boxes or expanders required! Here's a vid of that Viper https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-kiGrjOIOw8 |
