LED foglight replacements

Once in a while I happen upon a good thread on Corvette Forum.

http://www.corvetteforum.com/forums/...ety-issue.html

The OP mentioned using LED bulbs in his fog lights and I was happy with the pictures he posted up. As I already have HID headlights I didnt want a HID foglight solution. The OP posted up the place where he bought his bulbs but I thought the cost was way too much.... so after some online research... I found the same LED bulbs for 1/2 of the cost that he paid. So I installed them. I am impressed and I like the removal of the yellowish hue that the original bulbs put out. These are cleaner andnbrighter and I am very satifised but the proof is in the pudding so here are my images I took this morning

Here is where I bought the bulbs off of Ebay. In this ad they come in pairs so half off of what the OP had paid on Corvette Forum. Bleeding Edge Forum Mod signing off. Your mileage may vary. GC

I think they might be brighter, but I bet the reflector in stock is holding them back

the ebay add said it is not compatible with 1990-1995 corvette zr1. why would they say that when the part works for goldcylon?? I have hid foglights and have not installed them. I like the fact that these drop in. I know the led foglights are so powerful that some guys use them as there regular lights at night. guess I should just install the hid's I already have in the boxes.

Cause the OEM 896 was a lower wattage than the 886 in the eBay link

They will work

**Meaning wattage difference with filament bulbs.. LED are lower power so brighter light with less wattage

For same reason everything from a tailgate to a chrome bumper is compatible with the ZR-1 lol. Honesty how many L98 water pumps and optisparks and all other sort of items either will or will not fit. Lol. That's why I tested em. They work great no ballasts involved etc. I'm getting tired of the EBAY car ads as well for MY 90 - 91 sale ads that also add in seat heaters and side impact airbags as standard equipment.

I'd like to know how they made an HID application without the need for a ballast.

Re: LED foglight replacements

I'm not sure you would consider these LED's HID's.

My bad. I must've misread. I thought he said these were HID's.

Actually, he did.

GC, did you not say "I found the same HID's at half the cost so I installed them".

They are LEDS not HIDS I corrected the post. HIDS will not work without a ballast

Are the fogs in the 91+ cars that different? My fog lights are really good, use them all the time for exactly the intended purpose - morning fog. They are bright, and cast a very wide, low pattern that works very well on my morning commute.

yes, lenses and reflectors changed in 1991..

Re: LED foglight replacements

I know that. What I'm asking is, are the newer style lights worse than the 90s? Because my 90 style fogs perform quite well.

Yes I would believe so due to that design change, also I think there was a wattage difference on OEM bulbs, but don't recall

I edited the posted as I swapped LED and HID in one place on the post however, the title was LED foglight replacements. Sorry for that moment of confusion

To date there are no HID non ballast applications... however something tells me me somebody is working on it. I was not impressed with these in the daytime until I put them in the reflector housings and saw how clean they looked and performed in the dark.. way better on my 91.

I think it's the same as the stock reflector is maintained but the source bulb is now a brighter whiter hue. GC

Re: LED foglight replacements

I am updating this very useful thread with my experience to date with exterior and interior LED replacement. I haven't tackled the foglights or headlights yet, but I thought I'd update this thread rather than start a new one since it is difficult to find info on LED conversions.

I have replaced most of my interior (non dash) lights with LED assys from SuperBright LEDs. The vast majority of their replacement LEDs assys are indeed plug-and-play, are excellent fits and the difference in brightness is astounding (I used cool white for all interior lamps). The only issue is with the replacements for the two mirror (map reading) lamps; the suggested replacements were too large for the holes in the mirror where the standard 168 bulbs are fitted from the factory. I am awaiting their response for a fix. Thus far, their tech support has been excellent as is their web site for helping with decision making.

As for the exterior, I used CorvetteHID.com for the tail lamp/brake light replacements (C4LEDTAILSTAND2) last year. Like SuperBright, CorvetteHID was excellent to deal with and the products are high quality. I had to replace the signal light flasher with an electronic flasher (c/w ground) to make the rear tail/signal LEDs work, but I did NOT have to replace the four-way flasher - UNTIL I converted the front park/signal bulbs to LEDs this past week. The signal lights continued to work ok with LEDs at all four corners, but the four-way emergency flashers were rendered inoperable with the recent change to the front park/signal lights. I will change out the four-way hazard flasher with an electronic unit next week, and I expect that will resolve the four-way emergency flasher issue. As for the other external bulbs, they were pretty much plug-and-play with the SuperBright replacements, except for the 1156s in the front corner (white light illuminated when the key and park/headlights are on along with the turn signals). I used my dremel tool to "trim" the 1156 sockets to accommodate the 1156 LED replacement. I notified SuperBright of the issue this evening and am awaiting their response before tackling the other 1156 replacements (backup lights and rear corner white lights ,which also illuminate on backup); I had to remove a lot of plastic in the sockets, so I don't intend to "dremel" the other four 1156 sockets at the rear.

Finally, I converted the CHMSL (3rd brake light) to LED using "=Jeff=" suggestion to use a 2005-2007 Chevy Uplander unit as the base (largely because the Uplander assy has essentially the same height as the ZR-1 CHMSL assy). You have do some mechanical work (cut - shorten- the Uplander LED strip and clear lens, and reattach the clear lens to the LED strip), and you have to do some rewiring due to the mechanical changes, but it fits very snugly into the CHMSL housing and looks great (Jeff has pictures of his conversion on this site). It's also a snap to change it back to original if one should decide to do so at any point.

The changes in brilliance and longevity of the LEDs are definitely worth the effort but it takes research, time and effort, so others' experiences will be helpful to those that follow as well as those of us requiring another few yards to get the 1st down.

Cheers
