Metal in exhaust?

http://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.php...pictureid=2779I just got back from a 1 hr drive where I had the revs above 3k most of the time. When I got back, I found what looks to be metal in all 4 exhaust tips. It is not magnetic, but looks shiny from some angles. Does anyone have any idea what it could be? It does look similar to the stuff that collects on the bumper from driving, but that couldn't make it's way into the exhaust tips, could it?

Wonder if you have a cat coming apart.

Cats would make sense. They're pretty new though, fall of '12 if I recall correctly.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

You have headers and aftermarket cats? Common resonator?

Re: Metal in exhaust?

Headers, aftermarket cats, x-pipe, b&b mufflers and Z06 valves/tips.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

Do you happen to know if they are steel substrate or ceramic honey comb cats. You may be able to collect some of the residue and have it analyzed.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

You know, I really don't know which, but I want to say ceramic. Who could I send it to for analysis? I tried to collect some for a better look, but it gets covered with the exhaust residue and turns black.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

It may be more trouble but I think I would drop the exhaust and check the cats. You don't want the particles getting sucked back into the motor as you back off the throttle.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

I think I agree with you. I'm going to do a good cleaning and drive it one more time to see if I can collect some. Then I'll check the cats.
Thanks for your help.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

I was able to find a part number on the cats. The are magnaflow 59956 spun metallic.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

I buddy of mine recycles cats I'll ask him if has ever seen a spun metallic cat come apart. He said that and aftermarket spun cat can come apart unusual but does happen. He also said take the partials to a recycling yard and have them analyzed with an XRF.

Re: Metal in exhaust?

Thanks. I cleaned the exhaust and took another drive. Didn't really see anything else in there, so I suppose I'll keep an eye on it for awhile. I wonder if not really taking it out for a "spirited" drive in about 8 months had anything to do with it.

Great shot of those restrictive B&B new gen mufflers. Its a maze in there !! Sorry not much help on the findings. I had that once in my 93.. but my rod was poking through the oil pan and the metal bits in my tips were diamond pistons ;)

Re: Metal in exhaust?

Ya, there's quite a bit of screen in there. There was lots in the resonator I removed too. (Now I want a new exhaust...)

On the "debris" in the exhaust front, a few more spirited drives and still nothing else seen. I think it's all good and I can calm down now.
