Which oil filter do you use?

There are many to choose from, so which one do you use and why?

As always, if yours is not listed post it and I will amend the poll to include it.

I use the Bosch 3401 based on an article by Marc H. in the current newsletter.

Jon that is intresting I use a Mobil1 and my Pressure is around 3/4 and I was thinking it might be a little high (but I guess not) and I don't think I have any chain rattle. I am thinking about going with a Bosch though next time I change the oil. anyone esle have an opinion on this?

I have been using Mobil 1 filters for over three years with no chain rattle. In view of Marc's article I may try the Bosch the next time I change oil.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

Was using Mobile, actually purchased a case of them If anyone wants to buy them I'll sell them cheap. Pm me. The reason for the change is poor performance:thumbsdo: . I did a test took of the filter let it sit over night all the oil drained out. To confirm this I cut open the and all the was gone[-X .
I had some cam chain rattle that I never had before.:icon_scra New batch of filters? I put on the Bosch filter changed the oil. No rattle, higher oil pressure;) . I took off the filter did the same test oil remained in the filter as it was suppose to:thumbsup: . Did some further reasearch I found the mobile1 filter is actually made by Champion. That explains that....
Use what you will as this is only my opinion and observations I made.

Ray, which M1's? The old grey ones or the new black ones?

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I do not want to influence the poll but I must ask this question. For those of you using the Mobil 1 filter that are not having any chain rattle, why would you want to switch to Bosch?
Granted I also read the article by Marc, and while I respect his knowledge and advice, I have used a Mobil 1 without any problems. As I recall it was rated as one of the best for filtration with it's synthetic media.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

As Bosch being made by Champion I was unaware. I found a case of old filters from 4 years ago. My uncle owns a shop and had them in a warehouse. All I kwow is what I seen. When I had the filters that came with the car when I purchased it where old mobile ones painted black. The new ones seemed to be the issue.
Thanks for reading.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I switched to the Bosch after I started having trouble with the new black M1 filters. I had been using the old grey ones & I had good readings on the gauge and very slight chain rattle upon cold start up. On warm or hot restarts there was almost no chain rattle.

My first oil change for the start of the summer the A/Z by me had the new black M1's so that's what I bought. Major chain rattle on cold start up, minor rattle on warm/hot restarts and an alarmingly long time to have O/Pres show up on the gauge. I was very concerned that my O/Pump was quitting on me. I bought another black M1 & tried it and had the same results....now I was scared!

Came home(here to our home) and looked around & read the newsletter at the netreg site and decided that I was having some bad luck with the new black M1's. I was going to order another O/P sending unit but buying a Bosch O/F was quicker. All I can say is using the Bosch instead of the black M1 my "noises" at cold start & warm/hot restarts are back to what they used to be when I was using the grey M1's. Quick rise of O/P @ start up on the gauge and very little chain rattle @ cold start. My 90 always had about 3 seconds of chain rattle at cold start as I doubt the original owner ever complained enough while under warr for the dealer to replace the right side guide? Anyway, it always had about 3 seconds of rattle after sitting a week. Warm &/or hot restarts had practically no rattle and the O/P gauge always showed a quick (you almost didn't notice a wait for O/P) build to operating oil pressure.

I guess the A/Z where I buy M1's got a bad batch??? The grey ones worked fine, it's the black ones I had bad luck with so now it's Bosch for my Z! I know that this is unscientific but the nosies & time to build O/P were giving me nightmares!

Thank you, Bob.
I wish I could get here more often, too. I'm going to try better on that in 07.

Has anyone ever tried the re-usable ones like the Pure Power one?

Just curious - they look like a good idea 'on paper' at least and got a pretty good write up in 'Vette' a few months back.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I've been using the M1 and a couple months back I went with a Bosch. According to my highly claibrated ear, the Bosch may be a tiny bit better on cold startups after siting a week or so, some minumal rattle. Startups after just a few days are noticably better with no rattle at all.

Bosch - great performing filter, besides having that cool all black "Johnny Cash" look after removing the label.

Blackstone labs says my oil is clean so skicking with bosch.

Did notice from cutting them open they have changed thier design within the last year or two and they look better now, totally different check valve design.

Don, speaking for me...I can get the Bosch easier than I can get the A/C Delco stuff. The autozone is near the costco so it's a bunt, one round trip = oil & filter!

Better filtration with the Mobil 1, even though the OEM is good.

YA BUT... You don't need a Mobil 1 filter... I use the Bosch... Autozone carries them.

BTW... Walmart is over $2 a quart cheaper for Mobil 1 oil than Autozone

I read on Marc's site the Bosch drains thru the check valve after 24 hrs, so I'm gonna try the Wix from NAPA

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

The previous owner used Bosch and that's what I'm going to continue to use. No rattle from what I can tell, pressure comes up quickly, oil stays clean.

I've only owned the car for about two months so my opinion doesn't really matter.:p

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I will be switching from the Bosch to the WIX (NAPA) per Marc's new recommendation.....

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I've been using the Bosch for several years, but I've noticed more chain rattle with the last 2-3 ... Marc's new info just confirms this. Makes me wonder if Bosch has "changed" their filters. Shame, I liked the look of the Bosch with the label removed. I will be trying alternatives soon ... may even change to another filter in the next few days even tho I changed oil/filter a couple of weeks ago. This last Bosch filter has more chain rattle than any filter I've used.

Mine is not even shown. Valvoline oil filt.
But I also have some Frams.

Re: Which oil filter do you use?

I use Mobil 1 Extended performance and the Mobil 1 Filter that goes with it. No chain rattle or weird oil pressure readings on my 54000 mile LT5. I get it all at advance auto parts which normally does a deal on the mobil1 which gives you 5 quarts and a filter. I buy two kits each time and have some extra filters. Each time I also have an extra quart, so pretty soon I'll have enough quarts and filters to do it for nothing, sort of.
