First a Sinkhole Now a Solar Eclipse
1 Attachment(s)
Figured I would post this here since there is a current thread discussing the sinkhole and did not know where else to post it.
God must be a Porsche fan. First the sinkhole nails the dome. Now next year in August, the museum is virtually under the apex of a total eclipse of the sun. So I am headed to the museum the day before just in case the eclipse becomes a second cataclysmic event. The plan is to drive out from Southern California. Take in the museum and factory the day before. Next day find a place to stand for a few minutes and look up. Then off to Chicago and drive back to LA via Route 66 over the course of a week or so. A wonderful opportunity to drive across America. And I would love to meet some of you along the way. George “Then you flew your Lear jet up to Nova Scotia - To see the total eclipse of the sun.” |

Re: First a Sinkhole Now a Solar Eclipse
I have been through Oatman. Corvettes were made for this strech. Also on a few other stretchs over the years. My high school was on route 66. Another stretch of dead end was north of town. A great place to open the secondaries.
Jeff. You are on! |

Re: First a Sinkhole Now a Solar Eclipse
Great idea George! Also if cloudy/rainy you won't feel a wasted trip. Anyway, you can spurt over to clear skies based on weather forecast that day.
I just drove Denver-DC and still battling the perma-grin. The Z is made for long trips! |
Re: First a Sinkhole Now a Solar Eclipse
The plan:
Round trip from Los Angeles to Bowling Green to Chicago and back. About three weeks of travel time. Depart Tuesday August 15 from Orange County. Via I 15 & I 70 through Las Vegas, Central Utah, Denver, Kansas City, St. Louis Arrive in Bowling Green Friday the 18th. Spend two days in the area touring the museum and sights. (One day is a rest and contingency day.) Monday the 21st, take in a total eclipse-of-the-sun. 1:26 pm in or about Hopkinsville, Kentucky. Then drive on toward the Windy City. ETA the other end of Route 66 is mid-day on the 22nd. Then kick off the ride back. Basically, along I-40. We will drive the older roads as much as time allows. But will not be driving the portions that have reverted back to dirt. Plan is to take a day off from driving about half way back. Now you go through Saint Looey Joplin, Missouri And Oklahoma City is mighty pretty You see Amarillo Gallup, New Mexico Flagstaff, Arizona Don't forget Winona Kingman, Barstow, San Bernandino… Arrive in LA Saturday the 2nd, more or less. If someone needs to get back sooner they can shoot ahead. Along the way Basically, blast out to Kentucky, then taking our time coming back to smell the roses – see America. The Arch in St. Louis, Cadillac Ranch, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the back-hills of Arizona. We want to stop and see people; our friends from prior, friends we have never met, and friends we have yet to make. A few people have said they want us to stop by already. We are not exactly caravanning, but we are driving together. Keeping track in case anyone gets in trouble. And meeting up mid-day and at the ends of the day for food and drinks. Hotel selections are up to individuals. But plans are to average $125 to $150 a night. Join up for a part of the trip if you can. Right now, there are 4 or so Corvettes committed for the full trip.
