You are not a true Corvette owner unless you have the "infamous" airlid mod.

=D> Yes! Thanks for that post!!! Still laughing! In all versions! DRM modded the airlid of mine way back when the car was new. I "upgraded" to a claw in 2004. In 2010 - 2012 went STOCK with original AND a real Air filter for NCRS! spent hundreds!!! Now.......................... Carter ZR-1 billet knobs on the modded lid with like pant roller bucket style diamond mesh in pewter powder coat! looks great! Save money. Take tin snips to your cover and be done with it! Re: Got clawed
There was a guy named shawn with an almost stock ZR-1 that was running some really solid 1/4 mile times with just a claw and a cut open radiator shroud. I know locobob showed some minor gains in the midrange, with pulling dense air from in front of the radiator might help alittle more

Re: Got clawed
This will fit well with Jerrys intake duct..but a stocker I don't think would work

I like the red ... is it paint or powder coated?
|
Re: Got clawed
It was bad paint...I will repaint it....or PC it
The red looks pretty nice actually |
Re: Got clawed
Lee,
Nice find. I too have been clawed a few years ago and wondering if I will put in on my 95 now that I passed Japan's most difficult inspections and finally have license plates. It dawned on me how much "STUFF" you must have............ |

Selling or sold a lot of it off......but still a lot

Just curious. I'm not sure what these things sell for used. Were they like $350 new? (a guess) Thanks. |

Re: Got clawed
I run the claw with the stock air bridge, no problems. Dont think I gained anything though. Need some filter cones for mine, any idea where to get them?
|
Re: Got clawed
SLP Claw works great and you will notice the difference with either the stock coupler or solid one from Jerry Gaskets.
The Blackwing cotton filters go for $18 each and the reusable ones for $34 each at Summit Racing. Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry |
Re: Got clawed
My 2nd question would be did anyone check the CFM flow of the filters?

I forgot but K&N lists the CFM and SLP the part number. I had a crazy idea years ago to put 3 of those inlet electric turbo fans to create mini forced induction. A little costly experiment, but hell I have wasted money on sillier things. Sent from my iPhone using ZR-1 Net Registry |

I love mine, the way it looks and sounds; I'll never go back. I'm going to paint mine slate gray, along with the engine to match my GS wheels.

Re: Got clawed
I'd love to see some dyno readouts, or even better some 1/4 mile speed readouts.
I did some back to back testing of a K7N Fuel Injection Performance Kit(FIPK) GEN 2 at the drag strip. I arrived with the stock air intake, then installed the air intake. As you can see this kit starts at the plastic end which bolts o the stock throttle body(75mm) then reaches over to the passenger side where the stock 75mm Mas Air Flow (MAF) sensor is located, one end of the MAF sensor is located inside the sheetmetal box onto which that large oiled K&N filter is located. The metal box is mounted to the inner wheelwell via 2 ruber mounts which allows the entire assembly to "float" around as the engine torques around. The upper opem area of the box actually seals against the OEM hoodliner, leaving an open end where an opening to which the stock air intake was attached. Air comes from inside the fender. The metal box insulates the air filter and air intake tube from radiant heat from my headers. https://c2.rt-static.com/images/prod.../57-3013-2.jpg Which fits on an intake manifold like the ones pictured 3 pictures down, notice the vertical throttle body(this is not the stock 1996-2002 Vortec 350 L31 CSFI(Centralport Sequential Fuel Injection) intake manifold but its from a marine engine which uses the same Vortec 350 L31 cylinder heads which actually uses externally mounted fuel rails and injectors(which is why I installed one) Using the marine intake allows me to get rid of the problematic CSFI poppet valves which look like these. These flow at 23.1 lb/hr at 63 psi of fuel rail pressure. I am now using standard EV^ injectors with USCAR connectors which flow at 25lb/hr@43.5psi or 28.9 lb/hr @ 58psi(4BAR) of pressure. These are actually the same injectors which Todd suggests be used in LT5 apps. http://www.shopinjectors.com/vortec/...tec-spider.jpg This stock CSFI injection spider does allow for precise injector targeting. Pictured is the actual spray end of one of the 8 spiders legs. That is a mechanical poppet valve http://www.fuelinjector.citymaker.co...der_poppet.jpg Here is a stock 1996-2002 L30/L31 305/350 intake manifold(right) setting next to a marine intake that has the conventional external fuel rail and fuel injectors. http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/...idebyswide.jpg K&N FIPK installed https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xMUts-5tEZ0/hqdefault.jpg I installed a new GM air filter https://static.summitracing.com/glob...301c_hg_ml.jpg arrived at the dragstrip at 6:00pm right when they opened up, unloaded and swapped on the slicks and made a hot pass. Then cooled down and made a pass, waited a half an hour and made another pass. Then swapped in the K&N FIPK which took about an hour. Then made a pass, waited a half an hour made another pass, then waited another half hour. I noticed that both 1/4 mile et and mph did not appreciably improve between the stock OEM air intake and filter and then after the K&N FIPK. The numbers did improve, but simply because the ambient temperatures always fall at that time during the Summer and these same improvements have been observed many times previous and since my little K&N air intake test. The biggest observed change was the huge increase in intake noise with the K&N air intake. If you have the hood opened and manually pull the throttlebody open underhood, it literally sounds like an exhaust note. Even in the drivers compartment, the intake noise is much louder, actually sounding quite aggressive when compared to the stock air intake sound which was silent. |
Re: Got clawed
I found some dyno data that LOCOBOB had posted back in 2012 from this thread.
http://www.zr1.net/forum/showthread....ighlight=K%26N Here is LOCOBOB's post: Here is the old post from the CF. Results for peak HP were within margin of error but notice the average HP and Torque numbers show a small gain. Today myself and forum member/dyno owner TJ Wong set out to find the truth regarding C4 air intakes. We dyno tested 3 different air intakes on my Lingenfelter 368cid LT5. Tested today were: stock with paper element, stock with K&N element and a cut lid, and finally SLP's "claw" tri-cone filter design. All dyno pulls were made with starting coolant temps at 195 degrees F. Here are the results. Stock with paper, two identical pulls: 477rwhp. Avg. peak HP 477 Stock with K&N and cut lid, three pulls: 471, 475, 480rwhp. Avg. peak HP 475.3 SLP tri-cone "claw", three pulls: 477, 478, 481rwhp. Avg. peak HP 478.7 It would appear that the naysayers are mostly correct about C4 air intakes, not much to be gained here. Both Tom and I were rather suprised with the results. We had expected to see some small but visible gains with the cut-lid and SLP, instead we got a bunch of tests with peak numbers being basically the same or well within normal dyno pull to pull variation. The SLP unit does seem to have a small advantage over the others but suprisingly it's in mid range power not peak (see dyno graph average power #'s). I do know that a few aftermarket companies actually use the 1990-1995 LT5 air filters as the basis for some of their performance air intake and/or hood kits for various makes of cars. But I have just discovered that the air filter is shared between the 90-95 LT5, 92-96 LT1 and the 96-LT4. Hmmm, I always thought the 90-95 LT5 was larger???????? I do know that when dealing with air intakes on the GEN 4 SBC 6.2L LSA, 6.2L LS9 and the GEN 5 SBC 6.2L LT4 and the Ford supercharged engines, that the air intakes make much more of a difference than the N/A engines. http://dz310nzuyimx0.cloudfront.net/...4863650fe2.png http://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/ykIAAO...t6d/s-l300.jpg http://www.whiteracingproducts.com/images/154566.jpg |

Re: Got clawed
Just picked up a barely used SLP Cold air intake for peanuts....what is the tube stub for? This came with no instructions....was at SLP website and read this"Using the nylon hose barb, 7" piece of hose, and the two new plastic snap clamps, extend the factory A.I.R. pump supply hose so it reaches the tube stub on the induction tubes. Tighten all three snap clamps.
Mine did not come with a 7 inch piece of hose.... Thanks, John |
Re: Got clawed
You do not need to replace them and less they are torn or damaged. Purchase a K&N air filter recharge kit. Cleaner and oil. 13 bucks on Amazon.

I don’t believe you need to worry about that on our LT5 and maybe for LT1 only? Mine was capped off with silicone cap on both my 90 and 95. Attachment 7671 |

Bought it "new" on eBay $275, (more like a factory blemish)
Inspect the inside for loose powdercoat, paint...poor prep work. Didn't return it since mine needs to be stripped & refinished anyway to match engine color, like was previously installed by a previous owner. Filter elements came blue, so need to change that to red. The K&N recharge kit has red dye.Attachment 7666Attachment 7667Attachment 7668Attachment 7669 Sent from my SM-N920V using ZR-1 Net Registry mobile app |

At first I had just a rubber cap from local auto parts, but later bought a SAMCO cap. I couldn’t find the part number, but if you want silicone it will be called a blanking cap and you just need the measurement of the fitting. You want it tight fitting and no clamp necessary if so. Re: Got clawed
If it's not too much trouble to get the Samco cap part Number...it would be much appreciated!
Thank You, John |
