Pictures of a 180k mile Z

Having only bought her this week, the more I check this car out the more I'm amazed at the condition.

Here are some pix...

Right you are! Under the hood all the rubber bits are like new. Usually they're crumbling by now. All the window seals are new. Few odds and ends need attention but not what I expected.

This is a 27 year old, 180K mile car? Very nice.

Looks a lot better than mine when I bought it, and mines got 70k miles.
Someone did a good job looking after it.

The tires still show the little nubs on thread from casting.

Really nice find - well done. Lends a whole new perspective to the term gently used!

The interior is original. Surprising isn't it. The car was garaged and the mileage is from extended trips between SoCal and Maine. The interior probably shows the most wear of anything on the car. There is some slight warping of the dash, some of the seat switches don't work. (Fixing those right now) The carpeting is threadbare from age in places, mostly in the cargo area. But that's about it. Even the radio and all the speakers work. The original roof wrench and lug socket are still there as well.

Spent the weekend fixing the drivers seat switches and the bladder pump. Also cleaned up the seat itself with Adams leather conditioner. Came out beautiful.

Hmm, one round trip a year from LA. to Bar Harbor = 6,400mi. X 27 yrs? = 180K, more or less. That sounds about right.

That's probably the kindest way you could put 180K on a ZR-1, not a 1/4mi at a time like me. :dancing

Re: Pictures of a 180k mile Z

Pulled the spark plugs to see what they looked like and gauge engine condition. Also ran a compression test.

Compression was very consistent across all cylinders at 150 plus or minus 5 psi. This first compression stroke of each cylinder was 85 psi. Corrected for alititute (I'm at almost 5000ft here near Reno) put them in the 90/180 range. While somewhat disappointing, but not surprising for a 180k engine.

The plugs (AC 41-800's) were shockingly consistent across all cylinders. If anything the engine might be running a bit rich. They look like they have been in there for a while.

Over all I'm pleased, she runs and idles very smooth and pulls strongly here at altitude.

I'm still planning to run her to over 200k. In the mean time I'll save my lunch money for a rebuild.

Here are the plugs.

Hans you can gain a lot of compression by cleaning the valves.....they carbon up and don't seal.

I wasn't aware the situation could be that dramatic. Looks like I'll be doing a plenum pull sooner than later.
