What kind of oil consumption are you experiencing?

Trying to get an idea of expected oil consumption. If you respond, could u
identify:

1. The oil u use
2. Mileage on your motor
3. How much oil in qt/1000mi.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

Dom, I didn't answer the survey because I didn't know how.
My 85,000 mile 90 with Amsoil in it seems to blow through the first quart very quickly. Within 1,000 miles, throttle dependent. Then oil consumption slows way down. Maybe a quart every couple thousand. If I leave it down a quart, it uses very little.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

Has anyone noticed a difference in oil consumption based on the oil they are using?

Steve,

I have been busy datalogging and tuning the motor now that its back from
Dr. Greekenstein addressing the piston ring etc. So I’m doing some things w the motor that u normally don’t in terms of rpm v mph profile just to get data for the fuel map. These motors like to chew up oil when u play around w them.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

I "voted" for 1qt/1000 miles, give or take, which includes both normal traffic hwy flow, and some spirited (3000 to 6000+rpm) driving. AT issue, as Steve points out, it seems the usage is greatest as level is at the FULL line on the dipstick. That is to say, that first 1/2 quart goes away way faster than the last half (to the FILL line). Bottom line: IT VARIES..

1990 5.7L
almost 69k miles
AMO 10W-40 (full synthetic w/ ZDDP concentrations appropriate for the LT5)
Stock bottom end
Ported except for the TB
SW headers, 3" exhaust except for MF mufflers.

2/3 of a quart just before the 3,000 miles oil and filter change. She has 83K. She sees the redline on every outing...[emoji1]

1 Attachment(s)
AMSOIL 10w-40 or 30, blended with Mobil 10w-30 high mileage

1990 #1727 performance rebuild 7000 miles, exhaust valve seals installed

1 quart of blend added every 2000 miles

I agree the topped off oil consumes the quickest. I'll drain a few ounces from the catchcan every 500 miles which is more than others, but I like that the catchcan works effectively.Attachment 6703

1990 #1587 garage queen, doesn't get driven enough to analyze oil consumption.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

I noticed the usage of the initial amount of oil as well. When I filed it up, and got on it, I could see a puff of blue. However, in subsequent romps on the throttle it certainly is not pronounced like that. The oil level drops but not in increments like the beginning. This motor, for whatever reason(Compression and valve sealing is good) has used oil before as in 1qt every 1000mi or so. More so if you have a day at the track.

1990 #2841, 15 miles, recent Hailbeck 510 engine up grade. I am going through 1qt/1000 miles.

Most new car MFG’s use one quart in a thousand miles (some even higher) as a standard. I wouldn’t get too excited if it’s at that level.

I am not complaining, actually very pleased with the cars performance, just weighing in on the oil consumption question.

Hans,

If IIRC, while working at BMW, I was hearing of a quart in 500-750 miles as not unusual and within spec. Wow!

Running Royal Purple 10W 30. Haven't noticed any appreciable oil consumption. I'll have to check routinely to see if #473 is doing same as you guys indicate. Exhaust is clean, very little fouling inside the tips on the SW exhaust.. no smoke of any consequences at WOT.

How many miles on motor?

And here’s another question for everyone. Did u change oil used and find less or greater oil consumption? Or did it stay the same?

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

I'm running Amsoil 10w-40, just hit 49,000 miles, and I'm about a half quart every 1000 miles. Car is stock except for chip. I'm right about that point for an oil change, and usually know because of the start up chain rattle. It's none existent months after an oil change, but gets noiser as the oil life gets older. ( or at least that my theory )

George Maz 10-23-2017 08:57 PM

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

...interesting.
I noticed a developing start-up rattle when I topped off with Mobil alone, so now I top off with Amsoil/Mobil blend. I wasn't sure if it was that I just hadn't started up the car in a few weeks. I may ditch the blend concept of matching oil of 90's era, and just use straight Amsoil full time.
Glad you mentioned it.

I have about 1400 miles on the last change. Just checked it and still the same, didn't burn any. 25,000 miles, Mobil One high mileage.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

Rich,

Do u do any additives to that?

RichS 10-25-2017 05:29 PM

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

No additives, I did run the Joe Gibbs break in oil when I first put it back together, and ran that for about 600 miles before the change. So as you know, there would be a little left in the cooler.

1/2 qt. Every 1500 miles. I change it annually or 3000 miles including filter, whichever comes first. These days it?s annually with Amsoil AMOQT - Synthetic 10W40 High Zinc Oil

Since doing the injector housing gaskets, my oil consumption along with an occasional puff of blue smoke has pretty much ceased. Also, the mysterious disappearance of coolant in the overflow bottle has also ceased...:)

I have about 40 l on this motor it?s a 90 but has valve seals I change the oil every 3 k and if I use a 1/4 of a quart that would be the max I use 10 r40 mo Ike one

Yup... my guess is that most the oil burning we see on LT5's is actually from the lower injector housing Gaskets... Every single one I have ever looked at had loose IH's.

Well I need to recheck now that Pete took care of TWO oil leaks I had. One from the oil pump access cover, and another from the O ring of the chain guide tensioner.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

Normal driving is proper warm up and an hour or two of spirited driving to me. Living in rural farm country allows me many unsupervised miles.
I have experienced 400-1000 miles per quart on average over a few cars and 26,000 miles in the past 12 months. Anyone that doesn?t add oil is either fibbing a little or needs to hit 7000 rpm a few more times per hour. 90?s definitely use more than later years. I told a perspective buyer, who thought a quart per 1000 was a lot, that these cars were not for him. Nobody likes adding oil, but when you have no idea where it goes, who?s to argue the fun?

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

Mine uses about a quart in 4000 miles, and I wring it out when I drive it. When I first got it used about a quart in 1500, but after chasing down leaks it is where it is now oil pan was the biggest leaker. My E39 M5 BMW used about a quart in 2500 miles, once the leaks were sorted, about a quart every 1000 before that.

Hi,
How do you explain that oil consumption is higher when filling up to "full" on the dipstick and then less after consuming 1/2 quart?

That's fairly normal. Mine drops a whole quart and then stays there. And it's not going through the PCV system. I have a catch can and get very little in there. Haibeck has a write up on this and feels it's an oil control issue through the rings. If you read up on the development of the engine you'll find the engineers had issues with high crankcase pressures. The final solution, that box under the plenum, was a compromise at best. I suspect that once the oil level drops a certain amount its just enough to mitigate the pressures and oil being pushed past the rings, with slight variations from engine to engine. I'd luv to here one original engineers chime in on this tho...

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

I might guess that a cup of oil is replenishing the 11.6 quart cooling system, and it may have drained out some during the oil change.

Re: What kind of oil consumption are u experiencing?

How long does it take to consume that quarter?

I think you're right, because I don't know where this oil can go other than PCV (but you told me that the consumption at this level was not more important), or as Dynomite said by a oil pan leak...
