Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
This is a cold air intake. I have the same one on my car.
The air filter lid and radiator shroud need to be cut open to make it work properly. |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Karl,
Thanks for your reply. Not sure I understand why the air filter lid and radiator shroud need to be modified? Do you have photos of your's modified or manufacturer instructions? Thanks, Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
That does not need to be modded that's how it was designed it sucks in air from the bottom of the snorkel
Not to be confused Mikey's car in commercial number 2 with the old vdub pimp my ride series https://youtu.be/pWMpHc77qNI |

Goldcylon,
Thanks. Any idea where I can find info on this air filter housing? They also moved the sensor to the air filter housing. Gary .... |

You can see how the air filter is fully exposed and the housing cut for the air filter. Similar to the T.P.I.S. cold air intake many years ago for the L98 cars. There is more surface area of the filter exposed this way. https://i.postimg.cc/ft9Byyxt/Screen...615-172755.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/K1C61XWD/IMG-20230615-174546.jpg |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Karl,
Thanks for info and photos. Do you have any of the manufacturer's info on these air filter housings? Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
You have a rare one and I sold the one I had. Like Karl?s, mine did not have the air scoops so that is cool and a keeper for sure. I didn?t like mine once I changed to SAMCO intake hose and always had problems with alignment but wish I hung onto it. The company is long long gone. Enjoy it!

The rest is a standard cut air lid. |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
I had 1 of these a long time ago, could possibly suck in water if raining, fitment was terrible, ended up covering up the hole in shroud and went with open style frame with K&N, no regrets

Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
For cold air intake I used the 5 in hole from A/O Engineering and made it
rectangle opening thru the front bumper. stock air filter with open air filter lid Attachment 19610 stock air filter with lid to connect to opening in front bumper Attachment 19611 finished cold air box covered in cool tape by DEL Attachment 19612 With this I have outside air coming off the road straight into the modified air box. |

Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Here's an idea I have thought about doing....My car has the stock air duct with the typical cut out air lid on the top. I was thinking of possibly cutting the bottom of the intake housing underneath the K&N (slightly smaller than the air filter so it doesn't fall out) and then cutting the shroud underneath open as well... my thought is to not only have air coming in from the top of the open air lid, but underneath it as well. I've never seen this done though.
Am I crazy to think this... or just bored? lol Jay |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
OK, see if this works, when i preview it the photos show up
Attachment 19626 Attachment 19627 Attachment 19628 well that did not work. it seems that i cannot or don know how upload photos i'll keep tryimg john |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Jay,
Here's what I did to reduce temp of in coming air to filter. Get some bubble warp from home depot, Lowe's . Install it between your filter box and the rad. shroud. cut to fit so no one can see it, that will drop air temp because you are insulation the air box from the radiator shroud JOHN |

Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Opps I forgot the bubble warp is covered on both sides with aluminum foil.
also you could warp DEL cool tape around your air filter housing, but not over the air filter. JOHN |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Many thanks everyone for your information on this air filter housing.

Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
OK,
I'am going to try again stock air filter with open filter lid https://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.ph...pictureid=5156 stock air filter with lid https://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.ph...pictureid=5157 stock air filter with DEL cool tape https://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.ph...pictureid=5148 |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
aafc,
Any indications that the DEL cool tape helped? Thanks for the photos. Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
GARY,
Yes the tape reduces radiant heat from the radiator. If you have access to a temperature gun before you add any type of insulation check the temperature at different areas of your radiator shroud (motor running) Then add the tape or the aluminum covered bubble warp between the radiator and air box and recheck the temp (motor running) You should see a slight drop in temperature. You will not have outside air feeding thru the front bumper, you would still be getting air from inside your engine bay. hope this helps John |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
John,
Appreciate the information. Will add the DEI cool tape to the back of my air filter housing. About 20 years ago I did a study on Corvette floor heat insulation. Compared floorboard heat reduction products; Hushmat, Ceramic heat barrier, Energy Q & Kool Mat. Hushmat won hands down with a 40% temperature reduction. Hushmat product was 1/8 inch thick. Adding 1/8 inch under the air filter house probably would be too much. Thanks again, Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
UPDATE:
The material I used is called REFLECTIX sold in Lowe's , home depot ETC. Double face insulation rated R-21. Cut and place it between the air box and radiator shroud. Don't use cool tape as it not effective as the double face REFLECTIX in between the the air box and radiator shroud. Just cut to fit so you cannot see it when you put back together. Hope this helps. John |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
John,
Thanks for the update on the material you used. Have used that material to cover attic water pipes. Question - how/what did you use to secure the Reflectix to the housing? Appreciate the tip. Will give it a go. Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
John,
What adhesive did you use to glue Reflectix to the air filter housing? Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
Morning,
Take a small piece masking tape, double over itself and place on the radiator shroud ,then place your cut REFLECTIX into position, then install your air box. If you cut the REFLECTIX a little smaller then the bottom of air box no one will see it when you are done. I cannot remember if I had to cut out for the holes to mount the air box to the radiator shroud. It's not a big deal to do this. JOHN |

Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
John,
Appreciate the clarification that Reflectix is not adhered to the back of the air filter house and is just held in place by pressure. Thanks, Gary .... |

John,
Sorry, am a bit confused on what you're recommending covering with Reflectix. Photo of backside of air filter housing showing area over radiator. Appreciate your clarification on how much of the backside you actually covered with Reflectix. Such as from the outlet mouth to the vent holes or ? Thanks, Gary .... |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
I FOUND APICTURE OF THE RADIATOR SHROUD WITH THE RELFECTIX IN
POSITION. JOHN https://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.php?albuhttp://www.zr1.net/forum/picture.php...pictureid=3967mid=452&pictureid=3967 |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
John,
Thanks for the photo. Please correct my observations, if I'm not interpreting photo correctly. - Narrow end is the output of the air filter that connects to engine air input - Fat end does not hang over the radiator coils Thanks, Gary .... - |
Re: After Market Air Filter Housing Question
OK,
Just cut the RELFECTIX TO FIT ON THE BACK SIDE OF THE AIR BOX THAT GOES TOWARDS THE RADIATOR SHROUD. YOU CAN CUT IT A LITTLE SMALLER THEN THE BOTTOM OF THE AIR BOX SO NO ONE CAN SEE IT STICKING OUT. HOPE THIS HELPS JOHN |

John,
Thanks for your input. Attached photo of Reflectix added to backside of air filter housing. Reflectix tacked with spots of RTV. Thought about covering the other area shown, but was afraid the Reflectix might tear and block air conditioner condenser. Appreciate everyone's input. Gary ....:flag: |
