Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid

Seems like a good alternative. I'd like to find out if the resonator/xpipe combo is available separately keping the B+B mufflers. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
WOW THAT SEEMS LIKE A COOL SETUP . DOES MAGNAFLOW SELL THIS FOR OUR CAR ?
|
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
Interesting. It seems to be a 3" system.
|
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
yeah 3" not release just yet I don't think.. it is a new system..
Tips are round as well. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
I have a parts buddy looking into seeing if one can just buy the resnator and x pipe part will net you know .

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
Guys,
OK. Twisted Pipes, a local MF distributor here in northern IL called me back. This system just came on-line in the last 2 days. Its available. Its a complete system from cats back. Its 3" pipe all the way thru including resonator. Incorporates an Xpipe in front of resonator, which is really just another muffler, then 3" out of resonator to mufflers. They have 4" round tips that are rolled. $650. Sounds like a real possibility incorporating both an Xpipe and resonator. I've had MF cat back on my 84 and liked the sound very much. Unfortunately, resonator/x is not available separately. Here's my 84 Xfire with TPIS headers and Magnaflow 2.5" catback. http://s187.photobucket.com/albums/x...fing2006-2.flv |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
it will be interesting to hear how the resonance is with that system. I wonder if the resonator and mufflers are actually 3" internally, or smaller like B&B?
|
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
Aurora,
I was told the Xpipe and resonator are 3" throughout. The only place it necks down is at the manifold/catback junction. There it goes to 2.75". From the .pdf I posted, the driver's side inlet pipe is separate from the resonator assembly. Mine would need to be a ball flange mating to the drivers side collector. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
Interesting... I was just going to ask this very question and here Magnaflow already did it. I already have a Borla system and it looks like there's enough room for an x-pipe after the resonator. Opinions? Maybe x-pipe first and move the resonator back? Would it matter?
|
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
dont quote me on this but i believe the s pipe should be between 16-24 inches from the collector if one has headers

The MF system has the X-pipe prior to the resonator. Been talking to an MF distributor and he says the "resonator" is another of MF mufflers. I am currently looking at getting either the full system or using the rexonator with the B+B mufflers. The rexonator is supposed to be the same size as the standard resonator. I'll keep you posted. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
i replaced the resonator on my borla system with the x-pipe,and i got rid of the restriction inside the borla pipes, right in front of the resonator...no resonnance so far

I already think the system drones a bit, but there again, I don't have anything else to listen to -- 3 out of the 4 the Boze amplifiers is fried. The engine is my only entertainment... I just don't want to go deaf driving it. Quote:

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
i got rid of the resonator completely...replaced it with a 2.5'' x-pipe,but i kept the cats;not loud at all inside...i had a 65 big block with the original side pipes...wanna talk about resonance??...to me,my car is very civilized, both in and out;could even be louder,i wouldnt mind...noise is kinda hard to evaluate,tho...

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
I talked to HottExhaust about this system. They have it advertised for $653 including shipping. They cannot confirm the fitup on a ZR-1. Looking at the sketches the concerns I would have would be hanger locations and possibly interference at the X-pipe. Does anyone have any idea if this will fit.

How does the ZR-1 system differ from an LT-4? In fact the system we took off my car was an LT-4 system. The MF is built to replace an LT-4 system. I'll be finding out more shortly. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
I was considering modifying my original system, but for the money I would prefer to keep the stock system and bolt on a new system in case I ever wanted to return it to stock.

I saw the MF and liked the idea of a combination Xpipe/resonator. Bassani makes one for C5 with Xpipe incorporated into the resonator rather than in front of it. I've been told that you want the Xpipe as far forward as possible which seems like what the MF system does. And the MF is 3" thru to mufflers. |

I have an LT-4 system that came off my car. However, I don't have an Xpipe. The MF system gives you both an Xpipe and resonator. I had been thinking of pulling out the B+B resonator and subbing the LT-4. According to Marc H, that would increase my HP because the LT-4 resonator is 2.75" dia. which is larger than my current B+B. However, now add to that the benefit of the HP gain from the Xpipe. With the MF system, you get a resonator/Xpipe combo that fits within the space of the current B+B resonator. I don't think it would be possible to fit the LT-4 resonator AND an Xpipe. With the MF system, the rest is also 3". The incremental cost would be reasonable if I sold the B+B. I could also keep the B+B mufflers and create a hybrid with the MF Xpipe/resonator. I know of someone who would be willing to buy the MF mufflers and then I could sell the B+B resonator. So number of different options. Yeah still have the Watsons. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
will they sell you just the resonator on the mf system .is the price really 564 form the whole thing . if so where can one order one/ thanx

Here is the website. http://www.hottexhaust.com/detail.asp?product_id=16837 I believe youcan buy thre resonator and Xpipe separately but they would be pieced together not parted out from the whole system. IOW, you need the right part numbers. |

According to Marc H, the 3rd Gen B+B necks down further than that. One of the things we discussed at BG. |

Great seat of the pants improvement -- feels like another 20-30 hp on tap. It isn't any louder outside the car, but is a little lower in frequency. I do hear a bit more of a low frequency (about 30 Hz or so -- like a good subwoofer) drone from underneath my feet, but only at certain rpms as I accelerate. It's actually still quieter than my 78 Trans Am. I can live with it a lot easier than the factory placement of the cats -- anyone ever drive barefoot and burn their little toe to the right of the accelerator? Ouch! |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
growing up at the beach , I HATE SHOES, i allways drive bearfoot , never burned my toe though

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
Just a quick update after living with the X-pipe for a while for what its worth. Fuel economy has gone down from about 13.5 to 12.4 (I almost never get out on the freeway). The resonance is exclusively between 1500 and 2000rpm (right where I usually cruise, but I can live with it just fine). Not too bad considering the seat of the pants power increase, but you do get used to it quick (and at $4.70 per gallon for super...) Sadly, it is the more fuel efficient of my 2 cars, both of which require super unleaded... I'd rather kill myself than buy a Prius though. Love hurts.

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
I have a B&B 3" and headers no cats. Was thinking of having someone make me an X-pipe to replace the resonator. I don't really care if it gets louder.

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
so did anyone ever try this exhaust system out ?

SOTP tells me there's more power even down low and resonance is noticeably better than the 3rd Gen B+B I just took off. Its all SS, with rolled tips that look like the Corsa only they are massive. In typical MagnaFlow fashion, the mufflers are very much exposed with a mirror finish. The install on a stock manifold ZR is pretty straight forward. On a ZR with headers, it takes some creative modding. 3hrs at Twisted Pipes and Mike did a great looking install. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
so you like em ? are they pretty quiet inside the car . it sounds like a trip to the strip is in the near future:mrgreen:

Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid

I plan on going to the dyno first to see if and how much the tune may have changed. It sounds a bit lumpier at idle with a deeper bass note to it. At cruise its quieter than the B+B even with the Xpipe on it. |

Once you pull the resonator off and look at how it necks down from 3" you'll be glad you got rid of it. |
Re: Opinion on this Xpipe/Resonator hybrid
OK, Here's some pics of the Magnaflow and a brief vid to hear what it sounds like. All I can say, is that on cruise, it is quieter than my B+B. The smoke you see in the pics is due to new exhaust oil burnoff.
