New here : ZR1/LT5 questions

I'm going to have to replace an engine in a C3 that was destroyed (right, i see you guys already thinking). Anyway to put a long story short, i stumbled on the remains of an LT5 that was taken out of parted out ZR1. Engine was overheated to the extend that pieces were torn out of the cylinder walls.

I didn't ask more about it, since i figured that parts availability would be limited or very expensive.

Engine could be had for cheap. I don't think the ecu and cables are still there. I do have a aftermarket ecu that i think i could setup to work with it.

This got me thinking of maybe a rebuild, since i read that the cylinder sleeves can be swapped out.

Any input on that.

BTW : my knowledge on these engines is limited.

Thanks

Yves

Welcome to the ZR-1 Net Registry Forum!

The sleeves can be replaced. If it was overheated to that extent, the damage could also extend to the cylinder heads. Overhauling an LT5 engine without having LT5 experience can be an expensive learning process.

You might consider buying the engine, if it can be had for cheap, then tear it down and inspect everything to see what is still good so you can prepare a shopping list for what would be needed to fix it. Then, if you decide not to repair the engine, salvaging the good parts would probably get your money back.

You have come to the right place to seek information. If you decide to proceed with the engine, posting photos and asking questions here will be your best choice.

If you want to shop for parts to see what things cost, I have new & used LT5 parts for sale that will give you an idea of cost. Here's a link to my website. You can contact me directly with any questions if you like.

Hello Belgian...

Can you post some pictures of this engine?

And what do you mean with

"overheated to the extend that pieces were torn out of the cylinder walls"

The liners.

You mean the Nikasil coating of the liners?

I thought he referred to the exterior of the cylinder block....

He went into a litle more detail over at C orvette Forum. He meant the liners were compromised beyond the coating. I was concerned about the rest of the engine being warped to include the heads. A few other voiced the same opinion. But he states the engine can be had for next to nothing. So who knows
