Another question about a Hurst shifter install.
 

How much more difficult is the shifter installation with the exhaust left in place? I'm going to dig into this providing I don't have to drop the exhaust. I'm working in a 1 car garage so I want this to be as painless as possible.

I think I read that all work is done from inside the car (not from underneath), so, no, the exhaust can stay in place.

I'm sure someone will chime in with a definite answer soon.

From what I've always read the infamous pin needs to be knocked out from the bottom side of the car. It would be great if everything was done from inside the car but I don't think that's the case.

Ah, well in that case I'm glad you posted the question. I am in the middle of a new exhaust/Hurst shifter project, so I'll benefit from the answer, too.

You need to work under the car to remove the pin. I think someone has done it without removing the exhaust but I had to remove it even though I don't have big hands. Removing the exhaust is not that bad. If you have stock exhaust, it comes off in one piece. I balanced the exhaust on a floor jack and pulled it straight back.

Some people have had pins that came off easy but mine was tight. If your pin is tight, it helps to use a punch that is heavier. I don't know why the size of the punch makes a difference using the same hammer but it did. I wonder if someone could make some kind of puller to remove that pin.

Dropping the exhaust is really easy.. few hangers and and bolts and slides right off. I did the same just used a floor jack near the center and rolled it back out of the way. If you don't know where the pin is then it might be impossible without dropping the exhaust. If you can pull back the boot you should be able to see it and if you can fit something to punch it out youre good without dropping it.

I didn't remove the exhaust but it definitely cost me time in the end. Also I would spray the PIN with some penetrating oil before trying to hit it.

I didn't have a punch so that made a difference.

I did the Hurst in my Z in the car..

from what I recall, the exhaust will need to be dropped..

It can be done with exhaust in place. Easier with an aftermarket system.

BUT, you will spend more time working around exhaust than it takes to remove it.

Bring it to Vegas in October and we'll put it on.
