What Was Done and Replaced to Get 996 Back On The Road - Long Read! :)

I?ve mentioned in other threads the grief I went through with my now ex-mechanic, and the efforts to sort out my misbehaving ZR-1. I took it in to have three issues addressed. 1) Coughing at low rpm, which felt like fuel. 2) A hot lining smell after driving a while. 3) Safety inspection as required in the province. I towed it there, and more then 2 months later, I towed it away again.

Anyhow, while there, we did a bunch of parts swapping. A lot of it I had preordered, as I figured they needed to be done. Some of it, I likely would have done anyway, but not now.

The truly good part, which did admittedly add probably 3 weeks to the time in shop, was the fact that I could spec and order all the parts. Yes, Marc and Jerry got some nice orders!

In no particular order:

- Fuel pumps
-Fuel filter
- Fuel pressure regulator - Phil?s Super Duper one, of course
- All hoses - went with Haibeck for the more traditional look
- Haibeck thermostat
- New water pump
- New serpentine belt
- Radiator removed and cleaned
- new coolant
- Fuel tank emptied and cleaned
- Haibeck intake screen
- Spark plugs - Ac Delco
- All four coils
- Under plenum -PCV hoses
- PCV valves
- Haibeck chip (subsequently removed by the mechanic who actually fixed it. No problem with the chip, just wanted to go back to stock for a baseline)
- Every little rubber hose that Jerry sells
- Spark plugs wires - do plan on cleaning and testing the originals
- Jerry's pretty plenum bolts - just because
- Jerry's plenum gaskets.
- Jerry's vacuum connectors inline and under plenum
- idle air control
- Gordon Killebrews frame supports
- Every coolant and pressure sensor
- Alternator removed, tested and bearing replaced
- starter contacts cleaned
- under plenum drain checked
- oil changed with Bosch filter and Amsoil high zinc oil
- O2 sensors swapped

Hmmmmm. I think that's about it.

As things were not progressing with the first mechanic, I had it towed out of there and taken to a GM dealer who has a couple of guys on hand who actually know the LT5. Four hours of troubleshooting, and they came back with bad ECM. They found a used one, which is actually a GM refurb, plugged it in, and everything worked.

So at the dealer we got:

- ECM
- Trans oil replaced
- Differential fluid replaced
- Clutch fluid
- Brake fluid

What is a Haibeck Brake Screen?

Good catch. That would be the intake screen.
