Also changing to 4.10 gears this winter

Like some of you other guys I'm also considering changing from stock to 4.10 gears this winter. Seems like there are several possible sources for 4.10 ring and pinion sets these days. Not sure how they all rate though. I don’t want to end up with a howler just to save a few pennies. Any opinions out there on how aftermarket suppliers like Precision, Yukon and Richmond stack up against OEM gears from Dana in terms of quality, noise and strength? It is my understanding the Dana 44 HD differential in the ZR-1 has a larger diameter pinion shaft than the Dana 44s found in other applications so not all gear sets you see offered will work in our model Dana 44. I haven’t yet quite figured out how best to go about ordering so I’m sure to get the right ones. Does anybody know the Dana part number for the 4.10 ring & pinion set we should be using? Also, I’ve heard where some have used Viper gear sets. What is so special about these? and can you order them online anywhere? Any advice from you more experienced forum members is very much appreciated. I'm from just outside of Washington, DC in NoVA and it’s been a challenge finding a competent shop able to do the set up work. Hope you are in better shape where you are located.

Has some links for buying the Dodge gears. I seem to recall Marc H. uses Dana gears because they are quieter? Would be better to ask him than to go from my memory though.

My ZR1 is in with Marc Haibeck in Chicago. Marc is installing 4:10 gears for me. I have not found the shop in our area to do the install to my satisfaction. Rather than tell you what Marc shared with me, I'd encourage you to get the information direct.

when i changed to 4:10 a few years back,i was told that the viper gear is actually a dana setup sold thru dodge dealer...somebody can confirm this?
at the time ,the price in cdn dollar was outrageous,so i bought my gears from man & machine interface...they have an ad somewhere on the zr1net

Hey Phil,

When you do find a place and have it done, let us know how it turns out. I've been thinking I might go to 3.73:1 gears if I could pull the pumpkin myself and have the gears done locally. Then the smaller gain over 4.10's wouldn't be so bad as they wouldn't be so costly. I personally prefer the long legs of stock, and think 3.73's would be a nice compromise. Plus the speedo gear is easier and much cheaper to correct than with 4.10's.

Check over in the For Sale section down at the bottom of the first page or top of the second. It looks like Jeff is starting a Dana 44 Swap deal. Maybe you're interested?

I've got the Viper 4:10's in mine for the last 6-7 years probably and it has so many 1/4 mile passes I've lost track (previous owner - also my best friend). They are very quiet and no issues thus far.
