Antenna Replacement (Again)

For those of you that have replaced just your antenna mast, was it stuck in the up position before. Flyin Ryan replaced his, but it was falling over upon full extension.

If your mast was stuck in the up position, did you have to remove the whole antenna housing, take it apart and clean it out or just replace it as the various tech articles for replacing the mast indicate?

Thanks

Re: Antenna Replacement (Again)

I replaced my antenna mast because it would fall over on full extension.

If yours is sticking up when you turn the car off, I would suggest cleaning the mast as a first step.

When you turn off the radio, do you hear the antenna motor running after the antenna stops moving down. (It may take two people to determine this.) If so, you probably have a chewed up operating strip. An antenna mast replacement would solve this.

If you have the special tool that will remove (unthread) the nut that holds the mast in place, it is easy to remove and reinstall the mast. Then you can determine if the problem is the mast or the motor.

Good Luck,
Jim

The mast replacement is on the way, courtesy of Jeffvette. I can hear the motor running, the mast doesn't move. My antenna is stuck in the up position.

Thanks

Has anyone tried to delete the old antenna and replace it altogether with a newer mast-less antenna?

Antenna is done. I took mine out to work on it (well kinda, just laid it on a box) and it's a good thing. The old plastic ribbon had broken and it was in three pieces. My antenna housing had three screws and a nut in the middle that had to be removed. That's it. Removed the broken stuff and relubed and then I fumbled around with it until everything fit right and then actually threaded the cable in to the top, using the off/on knob to take it up in the housing, just like you would if your cable wasn't broken. Piece of cake.

Thanks for all the posts and special thanks to Jeff for the great prices on the parts.

Parts? Oh yeah, I put new gas struts on the hood and rear hatch and I have gaskets for the headers. Soon to be done.

Thanks again folks.

John, this is exactly what I did to fix mine. The cable was broken and my repair was just as you described. Good job! Now, about that header install...:D Its lotsa fun. Have you seen my write-up on the process? I think its on the PNW web site, but it is also here: http://zr1netregistry.com/jealheader.htm
Have fun, call with questions. Jeff can probably help too...I think he knows how to go about it.
