A Couple Of Newb Questions
First of let me say what an excellent forum this is - I have been poring over all of the Tech/FAQ/Tips sections and learned an awful lot in just the few weeks I've been here.
1) In the For Sale section one of the sellers mentions that the 93 to 95 405HP LT-5's has 4 bolt mains and the 90 to 92 cars have 2 bolt - I've been looking for this but can't find an answer - the ZR-1 site says the only difference was the intake and injector updates that accomplished the HP increase - nowhere does it mention a different bottom end - are there two different bottom ends on the LT-5? 2) I have been looking for suspension upgrades and perhaps an auto-X or weekend warrior section, is there a specific section here that I'm missing? TIA Scott |
Re: A Couple Of Newb Questions
Scott, yes on ofthe upgrades in the later 93-95 motors was a 4 bolt bottom end. It doesn't make any difference in hp. The only thing that does affect hp is the injector housing revision & a small change in camshafts. There was no change to the intake manifold other than adding in the EGR port on the passenger side.
On the autoX, the ZR-1 is heavily penalized with the extra weight up front, and also with most courses now being designed and better suited toward the Mini, WRX and other small cars. The ZR-1 really shines on the road course where you can stretch the legs. For suspension mods you are kind of limited to the usual sway bars, coilovers, some geometry brackets and heim jointed end links. |
Re: A Couple Of Newb Questions
Thanks Jeff - actually got my Cobra beat by a heavily-modified series 1 Miata last year, when I went to talk to the Guy he was pretty rude - so I asked him if his wife knew he drove her car on Sundays, my point being that you can put a Wiley-E-Coyote-Acme-Rocket-Booster in a Chevette, it'll be fast but it'll still be a Chevette!!
On the other hand I've never received anything but positive comments from the 'Vette contingent - usually helping me with the line and brake points as well. Also, just like the Cobra - everyone stops to watch a 'Vette through the cones. My goal is more with having fun than winning National Championships and I'll bet a stock Z will be PDQ in stock form. Thing is a prefer the black belt-line look of the '90. Can I assume that unless I'm redlined for longer periods of time the 2 bolt main motors will be fine? Also, with an exhaust, your chip and a PNWZR1 intake port and polish will get me close on 400 FWHP? Scott |

I don't believe there's any durability concern with the 2-bolt motors. It's not like a conventional SBC, the bolts hold on this fairly big ladder frame thing that supports the bearings. I believe it's a lot more stout than "2-bolt" suggests. On the power, FWIW, my 1990 has headers, top end porting, and a custom exhaust. It made 385whp on the dyno. I would reasonably say that this is over 400FWHP. If I were to guess I'd say closer to 450, and fairly definitely over 425. |
Re: A Couple Of Newb Questions
Ok - missed the belt line year- thanks Bob - sounds like a main web girdle also those are great numbers for just the easy (relatively) mods you've listed - I am quickly learning just how impressive the LT-5 is....
Thanks Scott |
Re: A Couple Of Newb Questions
Damn Bob - I just saw your '90 in the Rides section - stunning - really nice - hope you don't mind if I pester you about detailing once in a while?

Re: A Couple Of Newb Questions
Most use electric - slower and softer than air.
