Default Re: Got a peek at the Mercruiser Racing 1350 HP 4 valve overhead cam heads today!

Mike,

I'll get some pics with an object for reference. I literally only had time to get a quick peek today and my instructor had to call up to Mercruiser Racing to get permission for me to take the pictures. I'm not sure if they would be comfortable with me taking photos with a ruler or something in the shot, but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Sorry for the quality of the photos, but all I have with me is my cell phone. I'll try to get some better quality photos tomorrow.

Couple of observations/comments:

The intake ports are siamesed down to the area of the valve guides and the divider walls are knife-edged. I'll try to get a better look and pics of the exhaust ports tomorrow.

The 1 cam that is in the head (exhaust) looks pretty roughly ground in the reluctor area and has some type of coating. The gold/bronze color can be seen in the photo.

I think this head may have come off of one of the development engines.

The cam cover is a two piece assembly, as can be seen in the photos.

The cam has a cross flange on the front for the pulley. I don't know if they use belts or chains for the cam drive and am not sure how the cam timing is accomplished. Possibly pulleys with vernier setups?

They have three other heads here as well as at least one turbo minus the guts. Not sure why they pulled the guts out of the turbo, unless they are being secretive about the turbine blade technology.

Jep
