Synthetics are better. The differences are numerous. Search & study will yield a more detailed answer than can be provided here. It's been discussed extensively on the CorvetteForum and a Google search will yield even more.
This is not to say that you should not use fossil based products as there are many high quality products out there. Considering the high frequency of oil/filter change most car nuts do, either type of oil will do the job. If you decide to use fossil oil, at least change it more often.
The general consensus, as I see it, is: fossil (hydrocarbon) based oil for initial break-in of new engines with 2~3 changes during first 1,000 miles then switch to synthetic. Procedure is beleived to seat piston rings better than synthetics, as well as saving a few bucks on those initial changes.

I don't think it makes any difference with one possible exception. Synthetics after fossil oil may cause minor oil leaks as the synthetic will dissolve sludge buildup, if any is present.

Again, I don't think it matters. It's never too late to either continue good maintenance or begin, whichever the case may be.

There are several prominent, quality synthetics available. Stick with one of the leading products and you'll be fine. They're all good. If you just can't make up your mind, use Mobil 1 which is recommended by GM.

Do your research, choose the brand that makes the most sense to you and implement a reasonable change frequency.
Maintenance is not confined to just oil & filter. Don't overlook coolant, and brake fluid. It's a good idea to follow the recommended procedure to flush & replace fluids in both systems. Check the clutch master & slave cylinders while you're at it.
