In regards to shipping the top, TCurtner shipped one to me in March. He wrapped it in bubble wrap, supported it with closed cell foam, and used two overlapping guitar boxes. The top was perfect on arrival.
Hard to say it was overkill, maybe just enough. I also arranged to pick it up at the UPS store close to home because I didn't want it delivered when no one was home. Can't be too careful.
