Do the short struts make any difference when lifting the hood?
I think GM discontinued them after 88 or so, but left the "studs"

I just bought two of these
Hood Supports (one for a 90' and one for a 91'). These new
Hood Supports will actually hold the hood up without the stop in place and you actually have to apply a slight down pressure to get the hood to easily and slowly start to close.
Amazing what a New Hood Support actually is capable of.
If I pull the hood down about 6 inches and let go it will actually go back up to full open
