I'm in New York, and my hideway solution is to not worry about it. My front plate (which reads "1992 ZR1" ftw!) is sitting behind my driver's seat, not on show, and the front just has the stock 'CORVETTE' placeholder.
I have not had any problems with it, and AFAIK it's only a minor misdeameanor ($30 or so, I think) that incurs no points... so not really bothered. Many other local 'vette owners do the same, and they have had no issues either.
But....... if the car is parked on the street in NYC, then you will get ticket for it (revenue raising), if it's off-street / garaged, then I wouldn't worry about it.
