The Ostrich also uses an adapter. The stock EPROM requires erasing using a UV light. The idea is to use the Ostrich for modifying cal until you have what you want THEN burn it either to a piggyback chip with adapter or use stock prom that has been erased and new cal burned in. I've used the Ostrich now for 3 years on both my 84 and now the ZR with absolutely no issues. The 2.0 version is quite a bit smaller and bin upload is very quick. Can be done while motor is running with no hiccup. You can find info at

You are correct about starting to do it. I woud encourage you to do some reading about the various parameters and start with the basic ones. Make small changes and one or two at most.
