Okay, so everyone already knows how anal I am and how I like to experiment. So I finally get around to put on some of this insulation since I posted this last year. I have down time waiting on the heads, etc. to complete the LT5 so here goes...............
So I had this awesome material laying around for months in my way and moving it around the garage causing more dings, etc. on it and figured I better install it and get it out of the way.
I finally get around to starting a pattern after trying to figure out how I want to do this and what options I have for the shape of the floor tunnel. Using a marker to make the pattern and some tin snips, I proceed to cut out a piece.
This is some high quality stuff and not that easy to work with since it is a little stiff, but that is what makes it good and I think it will do what I want it to as far as sound and insulation goes.
Initally the plan was to make it like a u shape in the tunnel and it looked like a good idea at the time to make it cleaner. But that did not work once I found that was too sharp a turn for the liking of the material at the far back end so I trimmed it to fit as shown.
I cleaned the surface really well with lacquer thinner and placed it on the body. It sticks very well so you have to line it up good before placing it on.
I'm still very happy with the results and will do some fine trimming with a razor.
The plan is to join pieces together with aluminum heat tape to finish it off. All I could do on this initial test piece was to rub it with my hands to smooth out for now. I will go to Home Depot on my way home from work tomorrow and get a roller or something that would be used on vinyl flooring or something. Once I use the roller on it it should be nice and smooth with just the diamond finish.
I would have like a better fit on the back edge and trimmed angle but I had the piece screwed up from the start.
Anyway, my opinion on this product is it is awesome and I think it will stick pretty permanently as I tried pulling up on the edge and it does not want to give.
I can see this is going to be a little time consuming making the right patterns and fitting this. I'll take photos and document until the completed project. With the insulation I did under the carpet and this, I would imagine I am going to end up with a cooler and quieter Z. Maybe I won't even hear any drone from the B & B............yeah, right!!
