I've heard the same thing about coated or spray-dyed leather. But in my experience, leather that is cared for and treated holds up a lot better than leather that is not.

He is correct Leatherique is an excellent product. Spray it on and walk away let it soak in and dry into your leather seats. I have seen it help remove the cracked leather look that appears on our cars.
Zaino has a nice leather cleaner and conditioner as well.
