Default Coolant level - reservoir

What is a normal, cold temp level in the coolant reservoir (black plastic container) when cold? Does the coolant cover the return tube in the neck?

Mine is always to the rim just under the cap cold and up to temp never had it off when it was hot. The cap pressure determines when it goes out to the overflow.

Maybe my cap is a bit weak because my coolant level is usually at the bottom altho not empty.

Or you are low on coolant the overflow in the right front is the level that will change it has a dip stick in the cap showing the hot & cold levels. Once full you should not have to open the upper level unless just to check. Is your overflow tank full? the system should pull the coolant back into the upper tank when it cools.

The black reservoir in mine is always full (cold) and the white over flow tank always seems to have an inch or two.

Thanks for your feedback. While I am waiting to check in my car (scheduled for engine removal in mid-November due to repair work of the shop - a long story) I popped in GM Coolant Supplemental tablets (ground up walnut shells and ginger root - no s**t invented for Caddy alum. engines) and seems to have stopped steaming and no burping into the recovery bottle when radiator cap is removed. This tells me amount of blow back into the cooling system seems to have been reduced substantially. However, after 10-15 miles and cool down, coolant level drops to reveal lower pipe coming from the recovery bottle. Your comments tells me she is still blowing into cooling system.

Thanks.
