Default Dead battery....

I normally keep the car on a Battery Tender connection when not in use.

I went to start the car and noticed that the Battery Tender had a Red light and not the standard Green Charged light.

The dash lights come on but the starter cranks one second and then goes dead.

Looking at the battery, one of the cell top caps is leaking a bit of battery acid.

Both of the fusible links that connect to the positive battery post are cracked and corroded, one has a big cut with verdigree. My two fusible links ride on the back of the battery and over the years caused the cracking/open.

I'm lucky the Red Positive cable didn't get corroded as I had to replace one about 10 years ago. This time it's only the two rust colored cables (Fusible Link and Fusible Link B).

The FSM Page 8A-10-2 Electrical Diagnosis is the page that shows the Rust colored links connected to two Red cables.

How hard is it to replace the Rust colored cables only?

Are fusible links available these days?

Thanks,

Mark

Default Re: Dead battery....

Fusible links with the "ring terminals" are available and years ago if I needed them I always got them from a FOMOCO dealer. Call some local auto parts stores and ask for them with the "ring terminal" maybe first. You'll of course need to likely change the Metric wire to SAE to source them but I'd think no problem.

GM never did fusible links with ring terminals, just used bulk material. Nice thing about the FOMOCO stuff is they're all the desired length.

Some replace fusible links these days with MAXI or MEGA fuses. Decisions.

I see the '94 in your sig so already having the 2 under-hood boxes it's maybe a little congested there so if you're doing anything maybe the replacement fusible links is the right choice. MAXI or MEGA would require a small block also. Not having a later MY I'm not familiar with the congestion there.
