Default One or two fuel pumps? And: P/S & clutch fluid question.

Hi,

now that it's 2 weeks since my ZR-1 for 2 moved in I'm more and more narrowing down what she needs next. Basically I will have to perform a complete tune up, new tires, fluids, plugs, etc. And I'm pretty advanced (I think...) already on what I have to do but there are two things I can't answer from doing plain research. Therefore highly appreciate your recommendations on the following:

Puel pumps: on his website Marc Haibeck perfectly well explains how to convert the ZR-1 to a single stage fuel pump setting. Here in this forum I found that GM OEM fuel pump 25163473 (think it's a Tahoe one) ist a direct fit replacement. The question is: is there any better or worse? The fact that the ZR-1 has two fuel pumps appeals me. It's like a fighter plane that has all key systems redundant. Cool! However, currently she's running strong but as I'm in Europe and all defects mean waiting I'd prefer to stock up. So what is preferred - single conversion or replacement of twin pumps?

Fluids: I already figured out green antifreeze, DOT3 brake fluid and a good high pressure stable engine oil + recommended Bosch/ACDelco filter. But I'm not so sure about clutch and power steering. Again, as I'm in Europe it's not too easy to get hold of the original ACDelco fluids. I read recommendations of DOT3 brake fluid for the clutch and ATF DEXRON III for power steering. As both liquids can be critical under some circumstance - can you confirm that it's safe to use them in these applications with no harm to seal, gears, function, etc.? Or if not, what are alternatives or which standards have to be fulfilled to work with Corvette technology?

Matt,

My preference is 2 pumps for the simple reason thats the way it was designed. The single pump conversion is simply an expedient to solve the issue of the pump/sender assembly becoming very difficult to find.

Standard DOT 3 brake fluid for the clutch and standard GM spec 9985010 power steering fluid are just fine. Here in the US power steering fluid is largely sold in a generic manner. If you turn the bottle over it will list the various mfg's and specs it meets.

Hi Hans,

thanks for the reply. I also tend to stick with 2 pumps. As you say - it's the way it was designed.

DOT3 for the clutch is what I also found on the cap. Shame on me that I didn't check this truly reliably source first.
But very helpful with the GM spec for P/S fluid! A quick search came to good results. Now I have it all in order. Perfect! Thanks, and:

Regarding the two pumps, GOLDCYLON from time to time offers a jumper which swaps power between the two pumps - in case you get stranded. Like a spare tire, it will hold you until you can purchase another to replace a bad pump.
The wiring for the ~30cm long jumper is pretty straight forward for anyone with any mechanical skills, provided one has the connectors. The connector to the fuel pumps is accessed under the fuel lid assembly. The jumper is inserted between that connector pair - swapping power to the seconday pump (in the event the primary pump quits).

Details available on request. And, maybe Daryl (aka GOLDCYLON) will chime in. And, too it is possible that Jerry's Gaskets may not only carry fuel pumps, but I wouldn't be surprised if he didn't also have one of Daryl's jumpers on hand.

Thanks, Paul. Again very helpful. W.r.t. the jumper wire I was actually wondering where to get the connectors to build one. I read about this emergency solution and it apparently comes in handy when the primary pump fails. I'll try to get in touch with Daryl and already are in contact with Jerry as I intent to stock some of his gaskets and a set of injectors.

DELCITY is a good place to start looking for connectors too! (I posted a link to their Weather Pac connectors commonly used throughout our cars) If you "bookmark" it, you can get back to it anytime - just point and click!
